Can guinea pigs have a litter with two different fathers?

Female was in with two males. She had four babies two weeks ago.

One baby is black, like her.
Two babies (twins) are all grey.
One baby is ginger.

The ginger baby is the SPITTING image of ginger male. The other male has no ginger on him.

But the other male has lots of grey on him, like the two ginger babies.

Could they both have gotten her pregnant?

Are the males related?

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 29/11/2018 20:00

I have no idea! I only came to see if you put pics up. You did! Yay and awwww how cute!

IIRC they mate and form a mucousy 'seal' to stop some other random boar mating with them . They claim not to have the morals of cats Grin . Cats have spiney willies which stimulate ovulation.

My GP1/GP2 were supposedly brothers but one was a big golden agouti , one was a jet black Abby so I had my doubts . Could've been Dad/Son.

When I was much younger , my tricolour(ginger/agouti/white) boar managed to produce some very interesting combinations with a Himmy sow. ( black/white/fleck of ginger + ginger/white+ ?himmy (born white but born dead. Then agouti/ginger bum + tri ginger/agouti/white +himmy)
Only three of them looked like the parents , some throwbacks came to the fore !

Your piggies are gorgeous , piglets are so sweet .
This isn't the pg pig you rescued (she wasn't black) . ?

Tuna 😂

The males are certainly not related! They were from very different areas of the country to be precise Wink both gorgeous though.

The pics don't do them justice. I know I'm biased but they're beautiful! We checked last night and appear to have three girls and a boy, which is what I have too! Temporarily named the ginger one JJ (Jaffet Junior) as she looks so much like dad (Jaffa Cake).

Thanks for the info 70. I'd heard that about cats so was wondering if pigs were the same. Jaffa is definitely the dominant male so he is more likely to be the father. Must have some very old bloodlines in there!

No, this isn't the rescue guinea pig, she's having a much needed break from babies!

If you have no intention of breeding you nerd to take the males out of the cage your sow could be pregnant again. If one of the babies is a male you need to take him out of the cage at approx 4/5weeks if not they can inpregnate the sow. Both males will have been with the sow but it is unlikely they both got her pregnant. Hope this helps.

BirthdayKake · 05/01/2019 11:43

Polly I didn't ask this? I know exactly where to take them out the cage thanks, and have done so. Unfortunately the only male died anyway, so no concern there. I wouldn't let my girl become pregnant straight after having a litter!

So sorry.. Didn't mean to offend you was trying to help. Sorry you boar pup died. I did put in my post that I thought the two guinea pigs couldn't have impregnated her at the same time. Hence question answered. About removing the male I added that to my post as not every guinea pig owner does not know that. Just for the record I am a senior citizen had guinea pigs for years but not trying to tell you how to suck eggs.

BirthdayKake · 05/01/2019 20:33

Ahh thanks Polly44. I'm just a little hormonal atm! Sorry x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2019 20:47

I agree , more photos of the piggies (who must be about 8 weeks old by now so still very cute and pigletty)

I am in need of Nice Photos at the moment

Polly44 · 05/01/2019 21:57

Polly44 · 05/01/2019 21:59

That's OK don't have to apologise I have good sense of humour. Xxx

BirthdayKake · 06/01/2019 09:49

Aww we had cuddles with them yesterday as well but I didn't really take any photos! My morning sickness is horrendous so even the smell of the guinea pigs made me feel sick Shock and I always tell everyone how un-smelly guinea pigs are!

I found this one! She's confident like her mum but the ginger one is very shy like dad.
