How much run space for two mini lop rabbits?

We’ve just bought two male mini lops, having lost our two female rabbits, and we’re carefully introducing them to our busy household. After losing our girls we got rid of everything we had (incase of disease) so need to start again.

We’ve currently got them in a three storey hutch on the patio while they get used to us and the dogs and will be moving them down onto the grass in approximately 5 weeks once they’re fully vaccinated.

What size run should they have? I know that a bit like asking how long is a piece of string but because of the wild rabbit population (currently looking at over 20 rabbits by our back fence line) they can’t be free running.

Can anyone recommend a good sized run for the boys (Pickle and Parsley)? We don’t have a suitable space for a concrete slab and a shed due to the large transpiration area but we want them to have as much space as possible while still being able to catch them. Building something from scratch is a possibility if there’s nothing suitable available for purchase (we’re in Australia)

It will probably be easier for you to build something from scratch if you're handy!

If you can't pave an area, you will need to make any run dig-proof. If it's a static run rather than one you plan on moving about, dig out the space a few inches - lay some good quality welded mesh, staple it to the base of the frame and fill back in and turf it. No escapees!

As for dimensions, I would say no smaller than 6ft wide and 8ft long - that allows them space to get some speed up. If you can go larger than that, do! And no lower than 3ft high, partly for them and partly for you! I have a full height aviary with a roof for my guys outside time, mainly for me and my back! My aviary is 10ft x 5ft.

OH and if you build, don't use chicken wire, use welded mesh. A mesh too small to let mice in. You can also put mozzie mesh on the outside of it for extra security.

Thank you :) will get talking to our neighbour (he’s a carpenter) and see what we can come up with.

We’re used to have the girls in a 14ft diameter converted trampoline and that worked really well but we want something more stable and rabbit like this time.

Any hints for rabbit specific toys?
