Reptiles/exotics anyone?

Spilledmycoffee · 19/08/2018 23:03

Does anybody else keep reptiles? Or other exotics? I thought there might be a board for it but small pets seems to be the closest.

These are my leopard geckos. The females morph is albino tremper mack snow, the male (the larger one) is tangelo. I'm hoping they will breed sometime next year. I've not bred geckos before so I'm quite excited, and from what I can tell about the genetics involved, they should have some interesting offspring.

And this is my tarantula (and its dinner). It's a Chaco gold knee. Can grow up to 10 inches. Currently just a baby at 4cm.

Will post pics of my corn snakes tomorrow if anyone wants Grin

Anybody else with exotic pets to show off?

We have a beautiful leopard gecko called Gio.

We’ve just come back from holiday and he went to the gecko hotel. He can’t use his back leg as it’s completely floppy so ds is gutted. Talking to vet tomorrow for advice.

Spilledmycoffee · 20/08/2018 08:29

Oh no Sad. Poor gio. I hope everything goes well at the vets x

No reptile vets near here......

Spilledmycoffee · 20/08/2018 15:21

Did you not get to speak to a vet in the end then?

We have had a few snakes, 2 bearded dragons and a bloomin huge red iguana.
Sticking to our corn snake from now on. Too stressful!!
Snake is 8 now, gorgeous lavender colour. Good escape artist.
Shits for England and sheds intact skins which are great!!

Spilledmycoffee · 20/08/2018 16:13

Oohh I'd love an iguana if i had space and time! I bet it was a right handful.

Corns are lovely snakes. So many different colours. My new male bites, luckily I find it adorable.

She said they don’t specialise in reptiles but we could go in for a consultation for £45 🙄🙄🙄

Ds thinks he has metabolic bone disorder which is puzzling as he has had all the nutrients he needs.

There’s a reason I don’t do pets. Way too stressful.

Grumpbum123 · 20/08/2018 19:30

One Banana Python called Eric

Lauren0rder · 20/08/2018 22:06

Found a vet nearer to us now so will call them tomorrow

VimFuego101 · 20/08/2018 22:13

Does he have UV in his tank, Lauren?

Lauren0rder · 20/08/2018 23:15

No he doesn’t Vim but we were told he didn’t need it and all the research said the same.

Onthebrink87 · 21/08/2018 00:05

Kev the cornsnake 😍

CoruciaLady · 28/08/2018 14:54

Write to The British Herpetological Society at [email protected] and request they send you a list of Reptile Specialist Vets in the UK.

It could be that your gecko is dehydrated and/or impacted with food or urea.

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2018 14:57

Dds want a chameleon, I’m not sure a sthey sound tricky and I would hate it to get ill or die if we did something wrong
We are happy to put the time and £ money into it, does anyone have any advice?

CoruciaLady · 28/08/2018 14:57

Current research suggests that ALL reptiles, even nocturnal ones, be give UVB lighting.
In the wild (and captivity) leopard geckos get UV by exposing their tail to sunlight whilst sleeping.

Spilledmycoffee · 28/08/2018 18:12

Hoppinggreen chameleons are fantastic! I used to have one. They require a basking light, a uv tube, a vivarium with some height to it as they like to climb, something to climb on, and a regular supply of live food, which should be dusted with a calcium suppliment. They don't drink still water so require regular misting of their vivarium with a spray bottle, and a source of running or dripping water which should be switched on for an hour or so a day, with a bowl underneath to catch excess water. You can buy all this at a specialist shop.

They're straight forward once you get used it all but it can sound a little daunting. They are fabulous pets though and you quickly get used to it

Thank you
Dd has been sent off to make a PowerPoint presentation on how to properly look after a chameleon, including the details of at least 2 vets who specialise in reptiles!!
And of course all costs involved

BarbarianMum · 16/09/2018 21:22

2 Hermann tortoises here.

tadpole39 · 20/09/2018 21:39

I have a giant Asian praying mantis, and five macleays spectre stick insects. And the crickets that the mantis eats!

LucheroTena · 27/09/2018 18:52

I’d love a panther chameleon. They’re so interesting to watch with their little google eyes, sticky tongue and oven glove hands. Plus awake in the day.

Uromastyx are very cute especially the ornates.

The live food holds me back though. How do you cope with it? I’d have to store the food in the garage but would it be too cold?

Also love those little red eyed tree frogs.

Am fascinated by snake owners. Do you not find snakes a bit boring?

MountainPeakGeek · 30/09/2018 05:45

Just Eastern Hermann's tortoises at the moment (pic is one of our recent hatchings) but I've kept and bred corn snakes and leopard geckos in the past, along with Russian and Tunisian torts.

Reptiles/exotics anyone?
Olissa8 · 02/10/2018 10:10

I have invertebrates but no reptiles (I guess some of them are more like reptile food!)
Two giant land snails (Sheldon and Leonard), a Madagascan hissing cockroach colony, stick insects, and a now-solitary giant millipede.
DD2 loves snakes, and might get one if she is still interested in a few years. She's 8.

NotSoThinLizzy · 02/10/2018 10:18

I have a very pretty blue tounge skink. He acts like a puppy loves people 😊

Enidthecat · 08/10/2018 07:05

For exotics vets look here www.bvzs.org/about-us/specialists

And here www.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/list-of-advanced-practitioners/

All reptiles need to be provided with uvb in captivity, there are many documented cases of leopard geckos with metabolic bone disease
