I have two boys who are theee years old and this is their first very hot summer.

What is everyone doing about where to keep them?

My options are

  • stay in their hutch which faces away from direct sun.
  • put them in their playpen in the patio (maybe cooler but no growing grass to graze on but I can give them a snack bar, a food chew or corn on the cob).
  • put them in their play pen on the grass and make them some shade.
  • put them in their play pen on the kitchen floor.

I'd very much appreciate any advice. I have a houseful of very hot let's where only the fish are happy Grin.

Indoors as long as you have a cool room is probably the best option at the moment. Somewhere you can put a fan on (all wires out of chomping distance of course) and an ice pod for them to sit on if it's getting too hot.

These are fab if you don't already have one:

My girls are in their run (although we've practically no grass and everywhere is brown).
They are in the shade and have
A bottle of ice fully wrapped in a towel (I freeze a bottle of water at night for them to gavrme in the day). Currently Sadie is full length stretched out alongside it and Nessie is on top of it Hmm

They have the remains of the melon we had at 11 and a water bottle attached to the run
The run is totally covered in old towels and a damp towel gangs over the end they are currently sat at.

I have just been advised ordered by DH to out two golfing umbrellas up over the run to protect it more fully from the sun!!.
Tbf he has sat outside in the garden today for the first time since leaving hospital and he is a little red round the edges!

Their summer hutch is in the summer house and it is really warm in there so they are best outside ... albeit covered almost completely!!!

Thanks everyone

Clearly it is hot pets not let's!

I told DS to put them out but he's adamant it's too hot. Currently 28degrees.

Mine doesn't go out if it's hot. She lives in the utility room which is cool. She's been allowed out in her run in the evening if the temperature drops.

ThinkingCat · 24/07/2018 23:20

One of ours died once in the garden during a very hot spell Sad

Honeyroar · 26/07/2018 13:46

We have leaned a piece of slatted wood against our rabbit's run, like a louvre wardrobe door. They seem to like lying in front of that - it throws shade but lets breeze/air through.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/07/2018 21:41

DD has been putting ours out in their rabbit runs with shadey drapes that billow in the breeze and waft them.
Their Pighouse is in shade so its nice and cool. At the moment the runs are under a tree (mainly because we're having to search for grass at the moment)

We did frozen 2l bottles today , the girls were licking the condensation.

Lots of cucumber , bit of watermelon, leaves rinsed in water.

It is the toughest time of year IMO for little furries. They still like to hide themselves away , makes them feel secure but gives DD and I endless worry !

TheClitterati · 27/07/2018 15:35

Thanks for tip re wet covers for run. My gps are in run in garden covered with wet rug and get a bit of a breeze. They seem comfortable enough.

EastMidsGPs · 27/07/2018 16:33

Mine have spent the day in their run lying either side of a frozen water bottle Hmm

Life. Of. Riley. Grin

TheClitterati · 27/07/2018 17:15

I gave mine frozen water bottle yesterday. They were very perplexed 🐹

😬😜🤔

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/07/2018 19:18

Mine were in their Pighouse today (lots of veg, water, windows open, chill packs) , went out for 45 minutes and then had to back in when it poured down.

they scarcely got their faces round a dandelion they whinged.
Like you can find a bloody dandelion on the lawn, piggies !

TheClitterati · 27/07/2018 20:26

Piggies very happy to see us this evening. Dc and I went to beach for a swim after work and weather broken just as we were leaving the beach. Got home as giant raindrops were pounding down and piggies very happy to go back in their hutch.

EastMidsGPs · 28/07/2018 08:17

Tipping it down here this morning along with wild wind for good measure.

At breakfast I was greeted with two little sad faces looking out at the weather. Plus side is they may get to eat grass again.

FernieB · 29/07/2018 11:13

Madampig was so put out by the wet weather that she's trashed her cage. Both igloos are upside down, food bowl is tipped over and newspaper shreddedAngry. Guess who has to clean it out and take the rubbish out in the rain to the binAngry.
East - hope your DH is doing well and fully able to fulfil his GP slave duties

EastMidsGPs · 29/07/2018 11:29

Oh no Madampig being a Madam !! 😃

DH is doing better than I expected FernieB thank you for asking.
We've been out for a couple of walks and I've made him sit in the garden daily - near the girls' run to the delight of both him and the gps.
Sadie is a different piggie since he's been home, she loves lying in his arms and having a snooze and even Ness has stopped biting meHmm
