Recently got a new bun, so new to all this.

A lady told me today you can put your rabbits soiled sawdust etc into a bag and put out with recycling. Is this true?Hmm

We asked our local council about rabbit waste and we were told it has to go in the household bin not recycling or garden. However this could just be the policy of our borough and could be different for yours.. ring them and ask, thats what we did x

FocusOnMePlease · 23/07/2018 19:55

To add our rabbit waste is just soiled hay as we don't use sawdust for her x

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 19:56

Hay is better for them. Sawdust can have respiratory side-effects.

Some councils will accept the soiled hay and straw with garden waste. You should check on the council website as every area is different.

MistyReturns · 23/07/2018 19:57

Or if you have a composter in your garden it can go in there. It makes for really good compost

Byebyebye · 23/07/2018 19:57

Get the sawdust away from your bun and get them some nice Timothy hay

Ohmylord59789234 · 23/07/2018 19:57

It depends on your councils recycling system, ours says herbivore waste including hay/sawdust can go in the green garden composting bin
But now our council charges an extra £40 a year for said bin we give it to a friend with an allotment and he uses it for his veg and compost

scolotti · 23/07/2018 19:58

Really? I didn't know that about sawdust.

I'll call up my council and see.

Compost heap.

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 20:20

No need to phone the council about stuff like this. On the waste and recycling section of the site with the guides on what to put in different bins it should specify either way.
e.g. waste from non-meat eating animals like rabbits and guinea pigs can go into the garden waste, or
no animal waste including rabbit and guinea pig bedding.

scolotti · 23/07/2018 20:24

Thank you, just looked on the website and it says that small animal waste/litter is permitted. Larger animal eg cats and dogs are not.

Thanks for your help Smile

Definitely no sawdust. Some woodshavings are ok as long as they're dust extracted. When mine were outdoors though I just used blankets and hay (straw as well in the winter). They have Back2Nature pellets in their litter trays.

I have a compost bin at the end of the garden, when that's full I have to put in the general waste :(

Honeyroar · 26/07/2018 14:08

How did you use blankets, out of interest?

Lancelottie · 26/07/2018 14:12

Maybe fleece works better for rabbits, but I found with guinea pigs that washing the blankets made my machine clog up with hair rather quickly.

(Yes, I know you should wash them in a bag, and I remembered to do that maybe one time in three. Oops.)

Passthecake30 · 26/07/2018 14:13

Vegetarian animal waste can go in our compost bin.

I use a newspaper, wood shavings at one end, hay at the other end, in a rectangular litter tray. It all gets put in the garden waste bin.

bunnygeek · 26/07/2018 16:40

I have a horse numnah washbag to wash them with, otherwise your washing machine will die! I regularly change them around - but they are free range now and one is elderly and has accidents so my washing machine is always on the go! They're just all laid out on the floor for them. When I had rabbits outdoors I'd heap hay on top of the fleece in certain spots for them to rummage in.
