New companion bunny or not?

We have had a pair of neutered male bunny brothers for over 5 years and they've never been separated. Sadly and very unexpectedly, we had to have one put to sleep this afternoon and can't bear the thought of the other being lonely. Should we get another or is he a bit old to adjust? What would be the best age/sex to go for if at all. Thank you.

I think he will be lonely alone. But you'd need plenty of space and a second run and cage for a few weeks so they can be close but seperate. They say a neutered rabbit of the opposite sex works best. Is there a local pet rescue nearby that you can talk to?

Definitely not too old and the widowed will bond much quicker than a single whose never had a friend. If there's a good rescue near you they can often help with bonding.

I just had my girl widowed and she now has a new beau and is like a whole new bunny! She's 12 years old, he's 1! Almost an illegal age gap going on but they're so happy now.

If you're lucky, a well-cared for rabbit could live to 10 or beyond so yours is only middle-aged. We've just bonded our elderly male rabbit (aged 10) with a new baby female after his old mate passed away a few months ago. I hadn't appreciated how much he was missing her, but he has a new spring in his step since shacking up with his new little friend!

Thank you all. I think we'll wait a little while as we're away the next couple of weekends, then start looking for a friend!
