We have just rehomed a pair of GPs from a local rescue centre. They arrived yesterday much to the excitement of dd Smile

We have a large indoor cage where they will live and will assemble a run for the garden for them this weekend.

As new GP owners, any tips would be gratefully received!

In terms of food - hay twice a day, GP nuggets once a day and fresh veggies once a day, is that right?

Cage cleaned out once a week. How do you get rid of the poo in between? They've already pooed a lot!

That sounds great milli so you don't need any bedding on top of the fleece? Where do you buy fleece liners from please?

Just the fleece. My mum commented on how good they were when she looked after them. We use hay cookies as well so there is less mess from hay too.

There are others or there but I think these are the originals. The person who makes them is disabled I think so I'm happy to support her business.

You need something under the fleece to absorb - fleece is designed to 'wick' so any moisture goes through away from the guinea pig (like the top layer of a nappy or sanitary towel) and not sit on the skin /fur.

You need to brush all the fur,hay and pooh off and use a washbag or pillowcase (tied ) to wash it.
You need to be really careful with detergent , piggies are very sensitive to respiratory irritants.

My pigs don't like fleece , they choose hay 100% .

I've used fleece on paper+wood pellets in winter and hay cookies to reduce the mess...................but they'll get the hay everywhere anyway Grin

This fleece absorbs anything into the middle of it - it's a special design to keep the wet in the middle.

Ah, I've only ever used bog standard Primark or Ikea fleece (non plush) but I did make a fleece/inner layer using the old Hippychicks bed protectors that my DC had when they were little (they can be hot washed and tumble dried) ,
My fussy little rodents (we had GP1/GP2 at the time) squeezed themselves into their trug of hay. If you put two adult boars in a trug they'd be calling the RSPCA, but pulling themselves in it , is different Grin
