Fungal nose stripe

We have a guinea pig with fungal nose stripe. We went to the vet first and she said there's nothing that can be done and it doesn't bother them. She said you can use anti fungal cream but it'll come back again and again.

Is this right? Surely there's more to do than that. It cost us £90 to be told that so I'm only getting a second opinion if need be because we can't afford another spend like that again too soon!

Any advice?

Gorgeous Guineas website !

They have various shampoos and ointments that are gentle and you can get smaller sizes.
email them for advice and they'll get back to you.

I saw they had a Coconut+Neem melt so 'pinched' the idea and made a coconut oil (food grade) melt with boiling water then pre-soaked our boar (once the liquid cooled) before shampoo. He has quite a dry skin (Teddy)

Our GP4 had a dry crust bit on her top lip (not fungal) we used the GG calendula ointment which solved it.

Did your vet do a scraping of the skin to see if it was definately fungal rather than mite ?
Does your piggie scratch their nose?

(Have a good read through the GG site, its always good to have a couple of First Aid items tucked away . Their treatment shampoos are great too)

Firstly, I'd find a different vet. If they charged you £90 just for that, it seems a bit expensive. One of my girls had a fungal infection on her ear recently. My vet had a good look and gave me some anti-fungal shampoo to use twice a week for 2 weeks. The shampoo she gave me is usually used for dogs and comes in a large bottle, so she decanted a small amount into a little bottle for me to use on Madampig. I was charged less than £30 in total. The shampoo worked really well.

Definitely check out Gorgeous Guineas for shampoos as 70 has said, but I'd also look around for a different vet. I always check their websites to see the vets and nurses profiles to see what pets they have.

@FernieB all consultations are £45 and we have two guinea pigs. In hindsight we should have left one at home because it's identical. They're the vets at the guinea pig sanctuary so we know they know piggies.

Although one has now got better whilst we were out.

I'll keep an eye on them and try the cream. Thank you xx
