My little man Harold - 3 in July - he's been to the vets on Thursday and put on Baytril due to infected growths. One on his belly and one behind each ear. His eyes are sticking together and I gently bathe them. I'm changing his bedding and sawdust daily. The vet said to put 0.2 mml in 100ml of water. I do this daily. He's drinking about 25ml of water in 24hrs. I'm worried he's not getting all the antibiotics. I take him back on Wednesday and the vet said if he hadn't improved it might be nicer to put him to sleep. He's eating, but sleeping more, not as active , which I expect in an older hamster. Is there anything else I can do for him?

I'm not an expert, but I do think Harold has reached a fine old age. You're doing all you can for him. When our hamsters got old I fed them plain yogurt and carrot baby food - it was easier for them to eat. Maybe mix the antibiotics in something like that?

Hope Harold perks up, but if not, you can be sure you've done all you could.

Harold was put to sleep today. The poor old man had more tumours and was in distress so it was the kindness option for him.

I'm gutted. I know people will say it was a bloody hamster! But he would sit on my shoulder and chatter to me. Never bit. Bit grumpy 🤷🏻‍♀️
But he was my main man

So sorry to hear about Harold. You did everything you could. We're on our 5th hamster and none of them so far has lived more than 26 months so he did reach a grand old age.

Pour yourself an extra large mug of wine and have a jolly good cry.

RIP Harold

I'm so sorry to hear about Harold but I'm bloody impressed at how old he was! We've just learned my lovely hammy has bone cancer - a tumour in his lower jaw. He's home and has painkillers but it's now just a wait until it's kinder to have him put down. He's already feeling bonier and sleeping more and I think his fur is thinner and he can't clean himself properly but he's still so active that it doesn't feel right to end things yet. How did you know when it was time?

Sorry to read your hamster is poorly. Ok knew it was time with Harold , when he nipped my finger and was making a distressed squeak. He was sleeping more, not drinking or eating. When I cleared his cage out, I found treats still buried. Uneaten food in his house and he hadn't even had a wee. His toilet area was dry. I could of brought him home to live out his days. But the sound of him crying I couldn't cope with. We had one last cuddle in the vets and he just sat in my arms, the poor man didn't even have the strength to move. I know I did right by him.

Thank you. I think we're close to the point now. I've just watched him desperately trying to eat a little piece of hard food for half an hour and he can't even pick things up with his mouth any more. I've given him some tiny pieces of bread and grape and I think those have gone down now.
