Reusing Hamster cage

Our lovely hamster died at the weekend. He was 2.5 so had a good innings. we found him having had some sort of stroke or seizure (he was just rocking and twitching) and he’d also gone suddenly skinny (was fine a couple of days before) and was cold when I picked him up. Held him for a while and he just slipped away Sad.

Dd would like to get a new one straight away and I don’t mind but as she looked after the last one so we’ll. I’ve contacted the person we had him from and he says he has some lovely babies ready to go now.

Will it be ok to reuse the old cage? Was planning on giving it a scrub with a dettol solution and a good rinse.

Sorry about hammy, you can use the same cage as long as you clean everything, new food and water bowls though. Be careful with dettol it can be toxic to animals, I would call a vet just to check. Can baby hammies get through the wire, that would be my only concern.

I’ve done it with a bit of washing up liquid and rinsed it well.
A bit nervous about starting again-we we’re lucky with the last one and he was DD’s life.

You can reuse the cage, but you must give it a good scrub and it MUST be big enough to meet the welfare minimum - 80x50cm unbroken floorspace (shelves do not count). Cages from Pets at Home etc do not meet this minimum. Cages such as the Zooplus Alaska or Barney do.
