To separate pregnant guinea pigs?

Have 1x boar & 2x sows. Boar is neutered but just before he had his op he got in with the girls for the afternoon, they’re both due to give birth in the next week or so 🙄

All 3 are still together and going by my research it’s best to leave them all together as the sows sometimes help out with each other’s young, and the boar can’t impregnate them again - and separating would be stressful.

Has anyone had similar? Am I wrong in keeping them together? They’re all quite timid rescues & are guilt bonded, and I really don’t want to unsettle them - but obviously I don’t want to endanger the young either.

And I know I have to sex the babies and remove males at 3 weeks old etc, although I am worried about finding good homes for them if there’s too many for us to keep 🙁

See how many boy babies they have. It may be better to have any boy babies in with their dad as you don't want anyone on their own.
Older males bond better with babies.
Make sure no males and females at all go anywhere near each other after 3 weeks.

It sounds like you’re on top of it and doing the right thing. Horrible luck that both got pregnant from one afternoon when sows aren’t in heat that frequently.

I didn’t even note down the date it happened as I was convinced the chances of being pregnant were slim to none, know the week it happened though so got a good idea when they’re due.

They were indoors at the time separated by a partition, which he got down - could maybe smell they were in heat? Now they’re outside so if any boys they will be in completely separate hutches so no change of any more babies!

All Guinea pigs are approx 2 years old so I’m luckily that the sows had a litter each before they came so me otherwise I think the chances of them surviving the birth would be extremely slim 😣

1st sow has given birth this morning , unfortunately 3 were still born so only 1 surviver. All 3 adults still together and no signs of jealousy etc, fingers crossed this little one is ok!

Sorry to hear about the 3 stillborns, but that little chap (or chapess) looks very chirpy.

Love newborn pigs - really amuses me that they just act like mini pigs from day 1!

itsbetterthanabox · 05/02/2018 15:07

That's very sad.
Little one looks gorgeous. Hope Mum is doing ok.

Just make sure you separate the babies quickly.I waited too long(As they still looked like babies!)..mine all mated with mothers..pregnant all over again! It was carnage!!

Mum is perfect and keeping close to baby, I’ve heard horror stories of them dying giving birth so am relieved she’s fine. Now to keep fingers crossed for the other Mum to be.

Hi I'm looking for advice. I took in a female guinea pig a couple of weeks ago and I think she may be pregnant her stomach area looks massive compared to the rest of her. I don't know how to attach pictures on here to ask people
