Where to buy Megazorb West Midlands?

DoinItForTheKids · 27/01/2018 09:43

Well, we're going for it. Getting a cage/hutch today and going to adopt two Peruvian guinea pig girls from the RSPCA. I want to use Megazorb but am struggling to find out who stocks it and where.

I'm in the West Midlands, B65 postcode but can't seem to find any information online so thought it might be down to who knows where from word of mouth.

Can anyone shed any light? Thank you.

Try saddler/equine warehouses that you can pick it up yourself.
I've looked online but the cost of P&P was as much as the Megazorb.

I did get some Click&Collect from a local Argos (with parking ! these bags are heavy Grin )
I'll try and find the details (but I'm in Essex so not much good if its local)

Are your Piggies-To-Be on Megazorb at the moment? They might give you details of their supplier , though if its RSPCA they'd buy bulk.
A bag does last a while but its not my first choice mainly because piggies are so randomly untidy , I ended up trying to spot clean but it was too much effort.

I have bought big bales of Ecobale from saddlers for their floor in summer (chopped cardboard) and used a shredder for looroll tubes.

There's no Holy Grail of bedding sadly Grin , mine have cardboard then puppy pads under newspaper then a thick bed of hay . Roll it up and bin it. (Mine chew cardboard but not the puppypads)

Good luck with the new girls , when do they arrive?

We've got get the hutch (step 1) then call RSPCA again and get them to do a home visit and then I guess we can finally see these two ladies.

If you can't find Megazorb, then try Fitch, which is £21 for a massive 20kg bale inc delivery which is a bargain. If you've tried Carefresh it's very similar. You can buy it from the Fitch Recycling website or Amazon

TheHobbitMum · 27/01/2018 18:08

When I tried Megazorb for our 4 pigs I ordered from amazon (I didn't like it sadly due to the smell ), if you don't get on with it then another to try is Fitch paper bedding (like carefresh but cheaper) on Amazon. Good luck with your new piggies :)

DoinItForTheKids · 27/01/2018 18:24

What was the smell like @TheHobbitMum? That's kind of the opposite of what I wanted then because it's going to be in DDs room and I was hoping it would absorb the pongs of GP wee wee!

Can anyone tell me, I've got Pampers Care Mats that I sometimes make my daughter use when she's painting and God knows what - I know people get puppy pads and put them under fleece - would the care mats be ok???? What I want to try and avoid aside from maximum odour control (although it's probably quite stupid to even try!) is to not allow the bottom of the hutch to get absolutely soaked in wee - which is gonna smell to high heaven. So any thoughts, gratefully received.

Ignoring the smell of pee and poo it is the hay that smells worse and that is 100% essential for pigs.
I've tried hay cookies (solid blocks) but my rodenty ones like loose hay so no alternative - hay it is

EastMidsGPs · 28/01/2018 08:10

Just a tip, if you do buy hay cookies - ours have them as a treat as well as their messy hay, they are cheaper in Poundstretcher than they are in P@H

DoinItForTheKids · 28/01/2018 08:24

I'll have to have a rootle round Poundstretcher then!

I stopped using MegaZorb when they changed their packaging which meant it kept in a bit more of an earthy smell to it. Was fine for my rabbit's outdoor litter trays, but no good for when they're indoors. I use Back2Nature pellets now, that stuff is expensive however.

Fitch may be a better option!

I love the smell of hay.

DraughtyWindow · 30/01/2018 10:52

Try wood pellets - eg Aquamax - you can buy them from equine/agricultural feed merchants/stores. They don’t smell and last for ages. One bag lasts me at least 6 weeks.

DoinItForTheKids · 30/01/2018 22:35

Thanks Draughty I'll look it up.

There's a pet shop called the Hungry Horse - I think - at Mitchell's craft centre in Sutton Coldfield.

They sell megazorb for about £8 for a huge sack. It lasts for ages and I use it for a big play area.

DoinItForTheKids · 19/02/2018 18:32

Oooh, thanks for that tip, that's doable.

I'm thinking about putting this under their fleece to quickly absorb away the wee as it passes through - good / bad idea @notthemrmenagain??

OP posts:
NotTheMrMenAgain · 19/02/2018 18:39

Erm, never tried that but I'd think it would be a bad idea because I'd think the granules of megazorb would stick to the fleece and it could become very messy very quickly!

Under fleece I use towels, then newspaper, then finally a waterproof layer - plastic bin liners - on the bottom.

Megazorb I use in a 'play-areas' that has a concrete floor. I use lots of layers of newspaper, then plenty of megazorb in the areas they wee the most (corners and edges mostly) then lots of hay on top for them to burrow and snuggle into.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 19/02/2018 18:43

Towels under fleece works really well, was a big relief to me after months of trying different things. It means you don't need to change all the bedding in the cage/enclosure/ whatever every single day, you just sweep up the poo morning and evening.

It does add to the laundry but I just was all the towel and fleece on a quick, hot wash with white vinegar added to make sure it doesn't smell.

DoinItForTheKids · 19/02/2018 18:58

Yes I've got to say, washable is the way to go for me and I don't mind putting a load on of their bedding. Overall probably less mess than the traumatic events of today with a large, with me struggling with a wet fleece covered in shavings and poo! It wasn't a pretty sight!
