Guinea pig has died :-(

Feel very guilty as I usually go out yo them daily but didnt yesterday. They had plenty of food and water and hay etc and it was hectic and forgot. This morning i went out to put them in the run and one of the guinea pigs is dead
:-(
They are quite old. We have had them around 3 years but they were not babies when they came to us - they were needing a new home.

The remaining guinea pig was sat by his side squeeking ☹ He may have been like this all day yesterday. I feel awful.

What do I do with the dead guinea pig?! As children we always burried them in the garden but now im in a rented house and the foxes are constantly digging really deep holss so i think they would dig him up?!

Haven't told the children yet. 2 older ones wont be home till tomorrow evening.

Oh so sorry. I think you can enquire with your vet as they can dispose of the remains. We used to bury in garden but we ran out of room eventually. I had ALOT of animals growing up.

Is there a compost bin in the garden at all? fox-proof... or if a full burial is not required, wrapped and binned... or ask at the vet...

(sorry, not sentimental - DD15 put ours in the compost bin for a year and then got the bones out to study...)

Sorry to hear this :( And sorry for the piggy friend too.
I believe your vet can dispose / organise for you + I think there are pet crematoriums too.

Thank you. Im tempted to just put it in the food/garden waste and tell the kids I burried it 🙈

So sorry to hear about your guinea, such a shock. We’ve lost 2 4 yr old boars within a month. When the first one died the other one was lonely and still seemed like he had plenty of life in him so we got Him a 8 week old
Baby boy which worked really well. Sadly the remaining older boy died on Sunday quite unexpectedly which left the now 3 month old baby squeaking for him. So we’ve started the cycle again and got the baby a younger baby boy and touch wood so far so good. I guess it depends if you want to commit to many more guinea years or make a huge effort to give the remaining piggy loads of love, stimulation and attention. Hope your kids are ok, mine took it really badly when the first one died Xx

Please don't throw him away!

Dig a hole, bury him and cover with a very large stone or somesuch.

Very sad Sad . Your remaining piggie would've had enough time with his cagemates body to accept he has gone though (if you remove the body too quick they often fret because they don't come to term with it)

Our GP4 died last year (I think early March) she was in the indoor run with her boar , she'd been unwell, seen the vet and we were waiting basically.

I had to use a Lock&Lock breadbox because she died sprawled out with her legs behind her (and no I was not going to bend or break them ) filled with mint leaves. She had to wait ages in the garage (cold) till DH buried her. It crept me out knowing she was there judgily waiting to be laid to rest, but I could not have thrown her out .

If you do bury him make sure the foxes cannot dig him up (that's why I use the Lock&Lock , even if they did manage - and now I put a stone slab on them then soil- they cannot carry it off or open it)

NDN rabbit was dug up and shredded, nasty thing for the DC to see .

We lost a gp a couple of days ago - it was the strange squeaks of the other that alerted us.

I buried him deep as we have two keen digger dogs and put a few bricks on top.

We had a squirrel buried last year with The same burial and he is still under.

We aren't getting another one as the one left is 5 (we lost a 6 yo) and aren't going to replace the gp as one of our dogs is a Terrier and can be a bit crazy.

Sorry to hear that :-(

I think we might be about to lose a piggie of indeterminate age. We were told he was 4 but think he's older given what his nails are like. He's not himself this afternoon and today is lighter than he was yesterday and has developed a clean, non-itchy bald patch by his grease spot. The vet doesn't think he's in pain or has a fungal infection and he's eating but I think he's on his way out :-(

I've just tucked him up in a nest of hay.
