I am fed up with sawdust and hay so I am thinking of switching to this as we have an elderly GP who is losing weight (old age, he's been checked by the vet) and I think it'll be more comfortable for him.

Has anybody used it and is it any good?

I've used fleecey blankets for pets before ( not waterproof) and pets were fine.
Much better than sawdust and risk of infestation.
Can do a spot clean on days you don't do a properclean.

brizzledrizzle · 28/12/2017 15:51

I was thinking that spot cleans would be easier. As we have a large cage it fills about 4 bin bags when we clean them out, there is only so much we can cover in the garden waste bin with grass cuttings Grin

(We can put it in the garden bin, we checked but apparently we're not really supposed to)

We used newspaper underneath for warmth and then blankets however i was under the impression, like rabbits that gp need hay for food?
So you could take out straw, but not the hay?

stressedoutfred · 28/12/2017 16:51

Maybe look at Vetbed?

Smoochyschmoo · 28/12/2017 17:04

I made fleece pads - polar fleece top layer, cotton mattress protector in middle & waterproof mattress protector at bottom. However I abandoned it because the room the occupied was 23x7ft so I couldn’t keep up with the changing of fleece and washing etc.

Plus hay is a nightmare to get off it. When I abandoned that I moved to puppy pads and hay, but fleece sounds a good option for your older piggy 😊

RavenLG · 28/12/2017 17:14

We use fleece with towels underneath for an absorbent layer. Never used the ones you posted but fleece needs to be wicked to make sure it’s allowing liquid to pass through as if it sits on the top they can get wet, urine burns, bumblefoot etc. Spot clean twice a day and complete change 2/3 times a week. You can also use horse bags in the washing machine which will stop hay and hair going all over your machine. You can feed your gp rolled oats and cooked potato to put a bit of weight on him, or have a look at critical care on Amazon :)

I tend to buy 1kg bags of fleece offcuts from ebay for £5 for my rats cage as they can't have sawdust. It's all odd sized but it still works well.

MrMeSeeks · 28/12/2017 18:45

We've also used puppy pads with one of ours, life was so much easier Grin

brizzledrizzle · 28/12/2017 20:56

Thanks. I've ordered a horse bag and will order a second fleece once I've seen what the first is like so I can do one in the cage and one in the wash.

thanks for the rolled oats and cooked potato tip, I'll look at that and the critical care stuff.

YY to the hay, the guinea pigs would savage me if I dared not provide copious amounts of hay at all times. They had their blueberries today so I am in their good books and want to stay there Grin

Do they eat banana or herbs?
Best thing i did was giving up sawdust!
I don't think i could change straw and hay for our one pet as he likes to bury himself, but it changed the life for our other!
That and puppy pads!

brizzledrizzle · 28/12/2017 22:52

Yes, banana, coriander, parsley, spinach, watercress, rocket, you name it they eat it. They hate carrots though. Blueberries are nectar from the gods.

My pig likes blueberries Grin

I tried fleece in the past but only the coarse one worked, the very plush fleece kept the pee on the top layer so meant my piggies got soaked bellies. It was thrown out daily (cheapie Primark ones after Christmas sales)

I use puppy pads/newspaper/hay , rolled up and replaced every day.

My carpets within a 10 foot radius of the pigs' room get strewn with hay, my washing machine does not want to join in the fun that the vacuum cleaner has.
I tried hay cookies before but my pigs like to sleep in a haybed so whatever makes them happy Smile

Old piggies can go a bit scrawny , keep a check on his teeth, eating and pooh output.
Our GP1 went really ratfaced (no offence to rats) but was really bright to the end, just lost condition.

brizzledrizzle · 29/12/2017 15:24

Ours would eat the newspaper so we've never tried that.

Today our eldest pig has been a menace, he's been biting us after asking for attention - we smelt of blueberries!

They have just been out doing a find the blueberry game Smile

I use old sleeping bags for bedding and just cut to size.

millimat · 20/01/2018 09:05

We use these

Guinea pigs are happy and our room is so much tidier! Well worth the money.
