Guinea pig not eating after castration

I rescued a one-year-old pig which I was told was aggressive towards other pigs and had to be kept alone. I thought if I had him castrated I could get a little sow friend for him in the spring.

He wasn’t himself after being castrated - started squeaking a lot in a way that seemed he was in pain. He stopped eating and was drinking very little. I took him back to the vet and it turns out one of his ex-testicles has an infection. His weight dropped from 1kg to 900g in a week. He’s been on Baytril since last Thursday and is back to the vet on Tuesday. But he’s still not really eating. He had a huge appetite before he was castrated.

Do I just need to be patient?

That's great news - he's gained weight and is eating. Hopefully he's on the mend now.

East - have you tried opening the fridge and rustling a packet? That usually results in frantic wheeking- you can follow the soundWink

Rustling a bag of parsley worked a treat FernieB 😂
She was wedged behind DH's tool cabinet. Never had a piggie so adept at getting into tiny spaces ... don't think her whiskers are long enough, or she has crap spatial awareness 😂

'scuse the dodgy typing, i have gp8

good to hear the bruce has perked up, always a positive sign when they eat, most guineas would wrestle their own mother for fresh cut grass Grin

bruce is on the golden step .............unlike ness who is most definately on the naughty step.

my pig has very long whiskers but a mahoosive rump so she wouldn't rely on the whisker/arse ratio Wink

GrinGrin

We seem to have adopted the most stupid baby guinea pig ever 😉

Come on Bruce, you can do this, get well soon (but be sure to milk it for all it is worth,)

Do you ever look at your guinea-pig and think "Yes, I can see WHY you were in Rescue" Grin

GP8 was sitting on my lap, hinting that it was cage clean & supper time and making room for it by depositing droppings on me.
The thought did cross my mind that Hmm yes, now I see why !

(She is IRL adorable and snuggly BTW)

Glad Ness was rescued - no doubt she'll find a smaller space to explore soon! Current Bun always checks spaces with his whiskers, in fact, I've watched him do thorough checking on several occasions. He generally decides he'll just give it a go anywayConfused. As he is blessed with a rotund girth he invariably gets wedged.

I love these piggy tales. Bruce is my first one for over a year but both DC have now left home and he seemed a pretty good replacement at the time Smile
