The neighbors dog killed our Netherland Dward

Today our neighbors dog broke down the fence, trashed our rabbit hutch and mauled one or two Netherland Dwarfs. The other was missing presumed dead but has since resurfaced although terrified and shaken from the whole incident.

Male rabbit who is 4 months old - not yet neutered is the survived and I'm looking for help on whether I should get another rabbit and tips for introducing them.

The two rabbits were very good companions before today and he seems to enjoy rabbit company (no fighting or attacking so far)

I should add that we had them both from babies so although they were from different breeders it was very easy to establish them living in the cage together. My thoughts are

-another rabbit at all or will be adjust to lone living?

  • do I buy a baby or shall I try to find another of a similar age?

Can you speak to your vet? The night fight if not used to each other. Your poor rabbits, that's really awful.

What happened to the neighbour and the dog?

twinkletoesimnot · 23/11/2017 19:11

How awful. How is your neighbour going to stop it from happening again?

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 23/11/2017 19:13

How horrific for you Flowers

I read about as rabbit rescue on here that you bring in your bun to and they try to match up a friend. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along.

The fence is currently still broken but the neighbour has promised to repair and not let their dogs out unattended until then. It's a blessing in disguise really because my 2 year son plays out there every day and scarily it could have been him that was out at the time.

My main concern is that they will fight. I don't want to put the current rabbit through anymore and certainly don't want to take on a rabbit that I will have to re home.

What type of dog? I'd be worried with a little one playing outside.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2017 09:07

Could you have the wee one in the house instead of outside? Then at least he'd have human company. House rabbits are great fun, and can be housetrained.

That's horrendous! Binky free baby bun.

I would recommend keeping the remaining bun indoors until spring now, you won't be able to bond him again until after he's neutered. Hormones will be starting to kick in now and he'll be a bit shaken after that ordeal. I would keep inside, get him neutered at 5-6 months old, allow him another month to heal and let the hormones dissipate and in the meantime find a nearby rescue that can help with bonding. A spayed female would be the easiest bond, but they are in high demand at rescues!

Spring can be tricky bonding time as they are all extra feisty, even the neutered ones, so it will depend on how the timings work out.
