Urgent help please - gerbils covered in blood!

We have had two sisters for about three years. They have NEVER had a fight at all.

I just went to feed them and both are covered in blood.

They aren't easy to handle but will come to me if I don't pick them up. So I've had a good look and can't see who is injured but I think it's the black one as the other is a sandy colour and it's easier to see.

They seem to be moving ok and both came up for a treat. Although the black one is a little slower than usual as she's normally very fast to hide when you walk in the room and she didn't.

So I have separated them but it's only temporary as I don't have another proper cage (they have a HUGE tank with shelves and masses of digging to do

The sandy one who I suspect as the attacker has been looking old recently and a couple of times I have had to look closely at her as she looked dazed and still and was panting, but then she'd perk up the next second and be back to normal.

They are old and I don't want them to have any pain in their little lives. Do I consider having them both put to sleep rather then falling out and having more fights or getting ill? I suspect illness or old age is the reason for this fight. They have always been so close and friendly to each other.

Poor little things. My kids will be so upset to see them covered in blood tomorrow but how do I clean them up when they aren't easy to handle?

Any advice please?

Don't want to make you feel worse but my friend had 3 gerbil brothers and we came in one day to see them all in bits dead in the tank. . That sight will stay with me. .
I would get another tank and split them ASAP.

Oh god! That must have been awful!

They have always got on so well and have always had such an enourmous lovely cage that I thought they would just have a lovely life together. And they have until now!

I really think one of them must be ill or going a little senile in her old age. But I think they couldn't cope without each other either.
