Cuy Guinea Pigs

I was intrigued a while ago ( well more Shock ) that these pigs are commonly sold in the US and often get rehomed to Rescues or released into the wild.
Cuy are bigger, less domesticated, the 'Food' strain of guineas.
Can reach 6lb , extra toes , and a temper.
Chances are in California they can live wild.
But if someone buys one as a childs' pet then finds out its a huge , uncatchable bitey fecker ..............

So a browse of Gumtree and Pets4Homes shows a couple of UK breeders.
Give them their due , they post a caveat of Read up on this breed before you buy and they are far £££ than your average hog.

Would you want 5lb-6lb of feet and teeth that runs and hides and doesn't want caught? That can jump 3'-4' ?

I'm imaging a cross in character of rabbit like (independant, don't want picked up, will kick, will bite) in a huge pig body.

Why the Jeff do people (breeders) think "Oh this is a good idea".
Is it guinea-pigs plus for an adult pig keeper?
I know guineas are getting more exotic with their long hair, Satin coats, no hair, which some pig keepers will strive for, they want exotics and hopefully do the research and know how to keep them.

I think though if I was bred to be someones dinner I'd be a bitey fecker too Wink

That describes Current Bun (except he's a bit heavier)! I don't get these people breeding such pigs. They're hardly good pets. Much happier with my lardy pigs.

Ah yes but I'd expect a rabbit to jump, kick, maybe bite me and dislocate my arms when I try to lift it Grin. (Which is why I like my lardy pigs)

But that's not what I want from a guinea pig.

Its like people who breed Husky or Malamute with wolf hybrids.
So that someone can say "Yeah , wolf cross. Cool eh?"

No its a wild animal .

Its the need to take a beautiful shy ocile rodent and turn it into something that isn't Sad

Don't get me started on the dogs - pugs are just a breeding mistake, the poor things can't breathe properly. Bit similar to many lop rabbits with flat noses - they all have toothy issues eventually. Just cos people can, doesn't mean they should.

BTW. My wriggly, bitey, grunty, kicky Bun is currently tucked up in bed with me being a good substitute hot water bottle.

I've just cleaned Berts ears , he was very laid back, accepted a rub of coconut oil and warm muslin cloth. There was no unpleasantness from him but he looked a bit Hmm

No way would I want to peruse a lop bunny's ears.
I don't know why someone would think that a prey animal who relies on its upright mobile ears would benefit from low slung drooping ones that must in all logic, trap the moisture and mankyness and get stepped on .
