Scented sawdust

Currently stocking up ready for our new buns, they have an outside hutch. I've seen scented saw dust in pets at home, lemon or lavender and thought that's a good idea. But will the scent just attract more flies?

Not sure about attracting flies but I once bought scented litter (by mistake) for my buns litter tray and he refused to use it. I'd stick to non scented as they like to be able to smell their own scent.

Sawdust isn't the best for bunnies as it is dusty and can get in their lungs. Is it for a litter tray? If so I recommend using a rabbit sage litter - the back2nature brand from Pets at Home is good stuff. Good luck with your bunnies!

*rabbit SAFE litter!

I use megazorb.
It's fabulous. I get a huge sack from an equine store for around £8.

Another one saying no to sawdust! I use wood pellet litter for my buns tray ( covered in a layer of hay) and then hay on the floor. In the winter I add straw too

Thanks so much for the advice, will be avoiding sawdust in that case!

Even if you stick to sawdust, the scented stuff has a light fragrance when you first open the bag, but by the next day its "where's the lemon/lavender?" Bit of a marketing con, I think.

Their noses are so near the bedding (more so with guinea-pigs) they are very respiratory vunerable.

I always think scented sawdust is like scented sanitary towels- why on earth would I want scent near my nether regions? Or scent near my little piggies sensitive noses?
It might make them over-pee to mark their territory and hide the sawdust smell too.

Actually their hay smells more than they do Grin

Being the human slave to a piggie who refused to be near us when I inadvertently changed our washing machine tablets (and so our clothes smelt differently - took days to figure this out) I wouldn't dare give my two scented bedding Grin

I am sure there would be a dirty protest AND much sulking.
