Poorly pig

Hi all,

We have three sows, all sisters of about 2 years old. They are rescues though so can't be certain.

The biggest of the three has lost lots of weight, took her to the vet yesterday who thinks she has a bladder infection and has prescribed antibiotics and antiflammateries. We've moved them into the kitchen to keep an eye and she's eating and drinking but tonight has taken a turn for the worse. After her meds this evening she just lay on the bottom of the cage. DH picked her up and sat and cuddled her for a while, she perked up so he put her back and she did the same again. Is this the end? How can we help make her comfy or help her more?

I hope she's brighter today and on the mend
Sadly sometimes piggies just give up and die despite our best efforts.
Always hope whilst they are eating, drinking, peeing and pooing.

Aw it sounds like she really wants the cuddles , bless her.
Is her pee still normal, ?

Maybe give her a little nest from a towel or a little box with a folded up fleece?
(And if she sleeps om it you can keep a track of her pee/poo, otherwise its difficult with 2+ to see who does what)

Unfortunately when we went down this morning she'd gone in the night. DH had given her a towel and she was snuggly on that though. The other two have looked a bit lost as she was boss pig but DD has given them lots of lettuce and fuss and they've perked up. Poor piggy, we brought her into the living room last night though and she had some lovely cuddles and a good purr but as soon as we put her back in she just lay down like she was just waiting for it to happen.

Sometimes they just decide it's time and there's nothing you can do. I'm sure you gave her a really happy life. Lots of cuddles to you other piggies.

Ah but a peaceful end with her cagemates supporting her and some cuddles as her last memories. That's got to be a good ending to a little piggies' life I reckon.

Your other piggies will be a bit lost but they'll carry on with life's important issues (like eating - losing our GP5 hasn't stopped the other pigs from filling their faces)

If you bury her in the garden, protect her from foxes, you don't want to have her dug up. We recommend Lock&Lock boxes , a deep enough trench , a paving tile or similar under the soil then a hefty plant pot or similar until the soil compacts.

Thats a shame but sounds like you did the best you could by her..Bless you for rescuing 3 pigs to start with!

So sorry to hear this, but as others have said sometimes they just decide to die.

You may find that you end up without a dominant pig. My two cannot be bothered to work out dominance - older pig wasn't the dominant one previously and when she needed new friend, this one was dominant either
Doesn't seem to bother them, it does however mean we have indisciveness tho .. cannot make up their minds if they want to go out, come in, whether they like broccoli or not etc
As 70 says bury deep and in secure box. We always put a paving stone or similar on top firmly stamped down as well.

Thanks all, will sort a secure box and a slab. The other two have perked up today and have come out of the piglu to say hi, yesterday they just hid. DD is only three but she keeps saying how sad it is.
