Taking hamster to vets... please prepare me :(

I'm taking our Roborovski dwarf hamster to the vets. She's over two years old (exact birthday unknown as we adopted her from the Pet Adoption Centre at Pets At Home, like all our hamsters), but she was the very first we adopted, when I was pregnant and needed a buddy to keep me company, and I love her to bits. Her name is Tiny.

The last few days we've noticed a lump, near her back end but to the side slightly (definitely not a testicle, she hasn't been hiding her real sex all this time). It was small on Monday, big on Tuesday, even bigger yesterday. We gave her some kiwi and couldn't believe how big it is now. From what I've read, it looks like a tumour rather than an abcess. It drags on the floor, makes her waddle and stops her from being able to scratch.

We have an appointment at the vets in half an hour and I am trying to mentally prepare myself. Are they likely to attempt to treat it if it is a tumour or will the kindest thing be to let her go? I'm terrified of having a breakdown in the middle of the bloody vets :(

Ours had a lump. The vet used a syringe to try and draw some fluids from it, but it turned out to be a tumour. We were told to take her home and return when it seemed to be troubling her, to be PTS. Hopefully you have better news today. Flowers

They think it is a tumour. Turns out she is a HE after all and it's on the testicle. He has mites too which surprised me because we're really strict on cleaning cages and fresh bedding etc. She's given antibiotics just in case and back in two weeks for more Frontline.

Sorry to hear about your hamster Flowers

Sorry to hear that OP. We had ours years ago, when the kids were wee. They were devastated for about 3 days, until we got a replacement, as only kids can be! Unfortunately, despite telling the pet shop man that the replacement hamster, absolutely must be a female, as we already had a female at home, we ended up with a litter of gorgeous baby hamsters.

Oh dear! Gorgeous baby hamsters is always a plus though :)

When I told the vet we have two other hamsters, she gave me a look and said "You don't keep them all together, do you?". Thankfully we didn't, just in case any sexing mistakes were made! Thankfully he/she has a unisex name... the other girl hamster is called Annie, if we find out she's a boy too we'll have to change it to Anakin or something Grin
