First time rabbit owner questions...

We pick up our buns next Wed. They will be outdoor buns, one of each sex. Will be 10 weeks when we bring them home. I've read lots online but still a bit unsure of a few things -

What are your timings for opening/closing the hutch and feeding? Does this change between seasons with daylight hours?

I've bought a litter tray but have read online that you litter train after neutering. Is there any point putting the tray in now?

I've got pvc covered chicken wire for going on the grass to prevent digging and foxes. I've also bought Lino for lining the living part of the hutch. Do I put the sawdust on top of that then hay? Do I only do this in the sleeping bit or both bits upstairs?

This is our hutch

I want to get a run to add to the left hand side. Does this have to be wooden or can we go for an all-metal one? I'll line the bottom with chicken wire either way.

Really nervous about this! I've done loads of reading so I know it's going to be hard work. Be really grateful for answers to the above and any other general advice x

Sorry to hear about your rabbit rabbits Sad

Thank you Goood. Annoyingly it was because I was being a good sensible owner that she died - she went into stasis after being spayed and didn't recover. If I get another I'm definitely insisting they are neutared beforehand so I don't have to go through that again! (She was a rescue, but hadn't been done.)

Oh no poor thing. Mine are both being done in 6 weeks and I must admit I'm worried about them not pulling through. Ive not had a good past with my pets having ops.

I'm sure they'll be ok - will keep my fingers crossed for you and your wee ones. Let me know how they get on.

Thank you Smile

Sorry, haven't read the whole thead in detail and may be x-posting.

You will need to separate the two sexes. The female WILL get pregnant before the male is old enough to be neutered.

Ours live outside all year round (Cold Scandinavian climate) in a hutch like the Windsor but home made and much bigger. They just crawl into the bedroom when they want to so we don't let them in and out.

The DC give them water, pellets and peelings from the kitchen before school and I check up on them after work and give them some more greens - weeds from the garden in summer, carrots etc in winter. No need to think about daylight hours, but they get used to a kind of routine.

We line the hutch with sawdust and lots of hay, particularly in winter. They love burrowing in the hay and run around madly when they get new hay.

Rabbits are tidy creatures and choose a corner to poo in. Put the litter tray in the corner they use. We just have a wooden tray with a slight edge to keep the sawdust in.

Enjoy your bunnies!

We caught a bun in our backyard and brought her in before winter-extremely cold here. T o keep her company we got one at a pet store, which assured us it was female. Mum presented maybe 10 teeny bunnies to us while dad kept a stern eye. Had to farm them out to neighbours.

rabbits I'm sorry to hear about your bun Sad. Mine was done on Monday and I was really worried about it. He's fine but grumpy but I've never been so happy to see him eat!
