I have had gps for years but have always fed them in the evening, not really sure why Confused anyway have been thinking recently about changing to feeding them in the morning since there are so many other jobs to be done in the evening, I would obviously change the time gradually to get them used to it, but just wondered if there is an official best time to feed them and what others do .....

Our GP's are no longer with us Sad. I miss them so much. Anyway, I used to top up their dry feed and give them fresh hay and water first thing in the morning. Then I'd give them their veggies in the evening when I was preparing our evening meal. It made sense for me to do it that way as I would be chopping up veg etc anyway.

Ours were indoor pigs and used to wheek like crazy as soon as they heard me rattling around in the kitchen at tea time. Clever little things.

Mine are spoiled rotten and given food twice a day and all the bits in between when they wheek at the fridge door opening

Mornings (around 8 ish) they have some veg and fresh water.

Evenings (again around 8 ish) they have another serving of veg, some fresh hay and a serving of dry nuggets.

Twice a day here also. 7.30am ish they get fresh water, veg and hay. 6pm ish they get more veg, pellets and I fill up the haybox for nighttime.

Spoilt pigs in our house too.

They're fed first thing in the morning, before the rabbit, fish, humans etc. In the morning, they get a piece of veg such as celery or cucumber.

Because I'm around during the day, they usually go out to graze. If it's not nice enough outside, they get lunch of veg. Then in the evening, I empty their food bowl, clean it out and refill (same for water bottle) and they get a piece of carrot and some kale. If I don't put the kale in, I get stared at disapproving and a huge wheeky chorus until I oblige.

Sometimes, i do the food bowl stuff during the day, if I'm being organised.

I read somewhere that piggies are meant to have their veg in the evening because it's a quieter time for them to eat and digest (makes sense if they were living 'wild' )

But our pigs are ruled by their bellies and get into a routine, Breakfast and Supper.

If they've been grazing, they'll get less evening veg (sometimes just fresh hay and pellets+ water if they've been out all day). They have their bedding cleaned at night and their pellets/water replaced.

They like to do their evening pooh eating (nice Envy vom) so it fits their routines to have their main veg for breakfast.

Piggie food in the morning, about 7.30-8am.

Veg & hay in the evening 4-5pm.

If weather's good they go out from about 3-6pm.

Mine are permanently starving as their size shows, hmmm.
they have dry food and veg at 7am, and veg at teatime, with hay topped up am and pm.
plus treats of parsley inbetween. Spoilt lardy pigs Grin

Thanks everyone, think I'll swap to doing water and dried in the mornings then veg in the evening, plus treats/hay/grass when outside, greedy little piggies!

Ours have dried pellets, hay and water to graze on all day supplemented by a couple of seeded sticks hanging on their bars. They get fresh veg at around 7am and again at 9pm and fresh veg if they are getting lap cuddles. Obviously very spoilt piggies here but they are not overweight according to the vet and love their veg.

clippityclop · 14/05/2015 16:31

Breakfast of mixed veg and hay etc served to their ladyships at about 7.30am in their house, afternoon tea of hand snipped with the special scissors type grass/dandilions in the indoor run or or time to graze outside at around 3pm (when the chambermaid changes the bed) and a bit more veg etc at around 6.30pm. Usually parsley, lettuce or whatever when they have a cuddle and supper in front of the telly later at night too. They have a bowl of muesli/nuggets plus hay on the go 24-7 and fresh water changed daily even though the little madams don't bother with it!

food bowls topped up in the morning, hay in the evening. They don't get hay when they have been munching grass all day. Bananas when the DCs let the GPs sit on their knee when eating a banana - they will help themselves if the DCs aren't paying attention!
