Sending guinea pigs on holiday

When we go away a friend usually comes and feeds the piggies every day. We're away for 2 weeks at Easter (not usually that long) and I wondered whether to book them in somewhere where they can have time in a run, be outside every day and be a bit more spoilt or if the move would upset them and they're better off at home, albeit without time in a run every day.

I take mine to a rabbit & guinea pig holiday boarding place when I go away and they love it. They get to hear other guinea pigs chattering away around them and always come home more "chatty" as a result.

The owner of the boarding place has told me that rabbits can pine and go off their food when they're moved, but mostly guinea pigs vote with their tummy. Put them somewhere with a big pile of hay, some hidey holes and some greens and they're generally happy!

We always book our four in to guinea pig boarding if we're away for more than a couple of nights. We have a lovely place close by, family run. Pigs get cuddles and attention and lots of new friends to wheek to, plus daily run time in the summer. They always settle back in at home really well. Our place charges (per hutch not per pig) £30 for a week or £45 for a fortnight. It's a no brainer for me, worth every penny and I am far more relaxed knowing that they are being beautifully cared for.

(Not that neighbours don't care for them beautifully when we've been away for a weekend and they've popped in twice a day to sort the pigs out, but for a longer holiday I would definitely feel happier about using a boarding place).

Our boys are in boarding at the moment as we are mid house move.

If your in Leicestershire I can highly recommend somewhere!

Thanks. It sounds like they might be ok boarding then and will enjoy the extra treats.

We're in Hampshire and the places I've found will cost 70 for 2 weeks. But they seem to get a lot for it.

Definitely go for boarding. My boys love it. They get a nice view of the lady pigs and get to run round outside every day. My bun also loves it - he's a house bun and gets a huge indoor area where he can chat to other buns easily. They come home reluctantly.

YY our GP1/GP2 then GP1/GP3 have been on holiday (when GP3 was a young slip of a lad we requested a run away from females as he was bonding nicely with GP1 )

They had a lovely long hutch and a nice grass run to play out in, no females to upset their status quo.

The ladies (GP4/GP5 ) will need to get themselves organised for this year.
Usually if I take the DC away , DH is on Pig Duty Grin

Guineas can go downhill very quickly, so unless your pig sitters are vigilant, things can take a very quick turn for the worse .

Grin At your ladies organising themselves 70! Presume they'll book into a B&B on a farm and offer to 'help' with the harvest. Hopefully they won't want an all inclusive resort in South America!

When we had guineas we always took them camping with us. It was lovely.

Sounds like you've booked them into the same place as me - would be good to know what you think (is it the place that charges £5 per pair per night, and does their nails?). Only got our first piggies last autumn so have booked them in for summer hols this year.

Our two boys have just come back from their first time boarding - my Mom usually has them but she came away with us. I was really nervous but they seemed to love it. Had to stop myself ringing to check on them! I can recommend the place we used in Shropshire.
