Guinea Pigs - were we given an incorrectly sexed pair?

We got a pair of guinea pigs at the weekend from a pet shop. We were going to get rescue ones, but there's a whole different thread needed about that, basically they wouldn't consider us because we couldn't demonstrate we had a garden run right now, but I don't want to put one up in January as it's pointless, we'll put one up in spring.

Anyway, we got 2 male GPs from a pet shop. Today they seem to have been enjoying some "adult fun" and we're beginning to wonder if the shop got the sexing wrong and we need to start worrying this, or if this is something guinea pigs like doing regardless of gender, any ideas on how we can tell before we hear the pitter patter of tiny claws.

It is difficult to correctly sex guinea-pigs especially when they are piglets.
But in answer to your question- yes they do jump on each other regardless of gender .
Google some photos of guinea-pigs bits. The boys won't have very pronounced testicles if they are young but you can gently push either side to extend their penis (when I got GP3 as a 6 week old we had to make sure he was male to boar match. And yes he did jump on our older boar.)
Our two sows rumblestrutt but I haven't seen anything more.

You need to find out , they can get pg scarily young if they're boar/sow.

Pictures will follow shortly :)

We were told they are about 14 weeks, I'll try and have a bit of a look tomorrow.

If they are boars , they'll be entering The Kevin Years ( aka Terrible Teens).

Lots of space, hidey houses with two doors so they can't trap each other, distractions like heaps of hay to play in.

They eat pretty constantly and pooh eat when it's quiet .
And of course what goes in, goes out .......Grin

Our adult rescue sows (our neutered boar died this week) always snuggle up to each other for moral support. Sweet Smile

Guinea pigs hump for dominance regardless of gender or direction. I've had boars, got sows now. It makes no difference. I've even seen pigs humped sideways and on the head.

Guinea pigs need toys, plenty of hay and as much space as you can give them to prevent boredom and squabbles. Currently my 3 sows are occupied with a cardboard box I got from the farm shop. I cut a doorway in 3 sides so nobody gets trapped and they have been busy gnawing the holes bigger Smile If you give a guinea a box, remove any staples and sticky tape first and don't give one that has a lot of printed ink. Plain brown cardboard is best. Same goes for paper bags. I the pigs recommend Tesco and Primark brown paper bags with handles cut off.

The rescue you went to sounds odd Confused My girls haven't been in their outside run for months. Where I am Essex the ground is still frosted over. I picked some grass for them yesterday and had to wait for it to thaw out before I could give it to them.

Carry on as you are doing. Cold and damp ground can kill guinea pigs. Keep them an even temperature inside until Spring.

YY Essex is under freeze siege this week, I'm scissor cutting grass, rinsing under tepid water and drying on paper towels.
The laydeez don't care a fig about my poor navy blue hands Hmm
