Our lovely Rex guinea-pig boar had a bit of a gripey tummy (large soft poohs) we put him on a starvation diet restricted veg diet (and the sows, misery loves company)

Fresh hay,pellets water at night
Fresh hay, pellets, water and veg plate for breakfast. Probiotic and Vit C powder on the veg (they don't drink water so no point putting in their bottle). No apple, careful selection of veg that won't make him loose bowelled .
He was awake and chirpy at 3am on Wednesday, I went to tell them to pipe down. He gave his 'butter won't melt' look and started chewing the water bottle . I'll drink water, THAT'LL worry The She Devil

He improved in the pooh department, not 100% , but much better, some squashy large poohs, but we've seen some regular 'losenge' ones coming out of him.

He's losing weight though Sad though he weighed in at 3lb, I thought "Well he can afford to" but last weigh in he'd lost 6oz in total.

I gave him a worm and mite treatment (Xeno 450) and kept monitoring him.

This morning, new development....... his eye looks a bit blue-ish. There's a tiny mark (possibly a scratch?)

He's off tomorrow for a check up.
Could be teeth (which could explain the eye, but he has a the damage as well)
Would explain the weight loss but he's eating and poohing.
Could be some kind of gut imbalance , he's had a good few doses of the probiotic supplement but he might need something else.(The girls are also scoffing the same veg)

On the plus side, the old goat rumblestrutted at GP5 , she told him to "Foxtrot Oscar"

Life is never simple

Hope the vet has good news for you, or can at least help. Always a worry :( thinking of you x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/01/2015 21:08

Thanks sleeping piggies are a worry sometimes.
I think the eye scratch might be my GP5 with her whirling dervish razor claws (she tends to stand on the other pigs Hmm )

GP3 is still his usual bolshy Boris Johnson type of boy as he always is, still leaps out of the travel box.

I'm hoping the vet will say "He's a bloater who needed to lose the lard" but deep down I know there's a reason for it.

He might be bonking the weight off ?

Worrying Sad

Good thing about keeping your guineas close it that you notice any changes in them quickly.

Poor GP3, it does sound like GP5 gave him a swipe. Bet you'll be given eye ointment. He may have been innocently been after one of her soft poops if he has a iffy tum. I've never seen it but I've read they eat their friend's poop when they are not well.

Will be thinking of you and looking out for the update Flowers

FernieB · 16/01/2015 22:22

Sorry to hear this 70 Thanks. Hope he's fine and the vet tells him to go away and stop malingering!

If he's worried about his restricted diet, my boys have reassured me that they are happy to eat extra veg to compensate.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/01/2015 22:40

Thanks fortified and Fernie GP3 appreciates the paw holding across t'internet Smile

My laydeez assure me that extra veg isn't an issue, they have to endure the dry diet at night so they make up for it at breakfast.
Though they did complain that their Waitrose organic carrots with leaves had carrots in them Hmm.they scoff the leaves and make Carrot Art,

Nothing worse than leafy carrots which contain carrot, except perhaps leafy celery which contains celery Shock. People must think I'm mad in the supermarket as I rifle through the celery trying to find the leafiest one.

Will be thinking of your boy tomorrow. Paws crossed.

woodhill · 16/01/2015 22:54

sorry to hear about your baby boar

yes gps love doing carrot sculptureSmile

FernieB · 17/01/2015 10:14

Good luck today. Thinking of you.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2015 16:16

boary update:

teeth and eyes checked , all okay.

droppings are improving day by day

wight loss has stabilised (one ounce last week ) but he's lost about 6.5 oz overall.

Increase his veg and carry on with the Vit C / Probiotic.

DD and I very relieved and GP3 even more so "See you need to feed me More " Wink

We'll keep on weighing them and I'll see if I can find some nice leaves and grass later.

Glad to read your update 70.

The little horrors can be such a worry can't they.

Hope it's onwards and upwards for your little boar now.

woodhill · 17/01/2015 19:28

glad he's improvingSmile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2015 19:49

Thanks Smile - watching him having his teeth checked (and having to hold him) is not a spectator sport, their front teeth are simple enough, the back teeth are right back there.

Needless to say GP3 was very judgey but he's recovered his compsure now and told his ladies.

We didn't take the sows, it's a long journey. While we were waiting, a little boy was asking about him, and said how soft his fur was.
"Has he got a girlfriend" he asked .
"He has two " Smile

Glad to hear he's fine 70, though I expect you are in the doghouse with him now. Not feeding him enough veg AND you took him to the vets Shock. You'll need to get out on the lawn with scissors to make it up to him!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2015 21:41

I'm still a bit worried about his weight loss though, but bamboozled as to why he'd shed 6oz, quite a big % , though he could easily afford to lose some.

At least I know it's not something physical that can be overcome.(Or him being pushed away from the food but he's at the food before the girls. They're going from strength to strength weightwise)
And yes, I'll be out scouring for nice grass with the scissors. At the moment they're settling for nice hay and some Timothy hay and a salad plate.

dietcokeandwine · 18/01/2015 13:46

How is he today 70?

Hopefully the weight loss has just been triggered by the slightly dodgy tummy, and that weight will go on again once that has settled?

Hope you've been out with your grass cutting scissors and that any food offerings have been graciously accepted Smile (There are some nice tender dandelion leaves about at the moment as well).

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/01/2015 15:26

I woke DD with A Boar Hug , he had some normal losenge poohs that he was popping out Grin

Yes, the grass scissors were out today though there isn't much to be had. (No dandelions either)

He was a tad quiet but as DD said, his throat was probably a bit tender?
