What bedding do you use?

My two medium sized rabbits live in a roomy 6ft hutch with run. I'm spending a small fortune on litter and wonder if I'm missing a trick as they use tonnes of litter a week!

I'm using about 5 cm of back2nature recycled paper pellets with hay on top throughout the hutch plus two litter trays (again with litter and hay in them) in the corners. I'm easily getting through a 30L bag a week which costs upwards of £15 plus delivery on Amazon. They produce a bucket load of poo and wee - more than most rabbits I think!. The litter trays are always pretty saturated on a daily basis plus there are always loads more poos dotted around their bedroom every single day so I end up having to chuck out a lot. They do eat quite a bit - 2 egg cups full of pellets each a day plus at least 3 pieces of veg ie a stick of celery, half an apple or a large handful of kale each per day - I now this is too much and we are working on reducing it :(- plus they have access to fresh grass on a daily basis. Is there a cheaper but good litter you'd recommend while we work to reduce their food input poo output?

one handed typing, i have my little guinea-pig here Smile

have you looked at equine bedding. alot of it isn't suitable - some is scented to stop the horse bed eating.
i'm trialling 'ecobale' with my guineas at the moment about 7.49 for a 20kg bale - it's chopped up cardboard basically. i bought three bales from a saddlery - i had no idea how big a bale was till i tried to fit them in my car. Hmm

don't know about rabbit's toilet habits but i find my pigs are messier at night, when they are indoors for winter nights/out by day, their night cage needs daily changing, outdoor stays much nicer.
but new sows pee rivers .

would your bunnies use a covered litter tray . like the covered cat ones , to keep it all contained.

do they use vetbed or fleece which wicks through

That's genuis 30!!! Of course equine bedding would be supplied in far greater amounts making better value for money - will investigate :) :)

Are they neutered? Apart from the health reasons for neutering, another benefit is that it can make them easier to litter train. My bun (and all previous buns) were litter trained and all I do is change the litter tray daily. The rest of the cage just has newspaper down and I change that every 1-2 weeks (it stays clean).

I use wood pellet litter in his tray and he has a hidey hole which has hay in. A bag of litter lasts a month. Have you tried supermarket own brand wood pellet cat litter? It's often cheaper and does the job.

Just re read your post. If they are only weeing in the litter trays, why not just put newspaper down everywhere else? You will easily see their stray 'bunny currants' and can pick them up but won't have to change the paper as often. They don't need hay in their whole house.
