We've had them years. Didn't know they can't have mushrooms.

One has died and the other looks like it will. It's been to the vet who says they can't do anything. Just to wait and see.

I'm so stupid

Well piggy is still very subdued. Not really doing anything. We've got her in an indoor dog cage. She's eating, drinking, weeing and pooing. Apart from that is sat in her little igloo. If you pull the igloo up she just sits there.

Might this be an after. Effect from the poison? Or just shock?

Dd is keen to get her a friend but I've said no for now because if she's still feeling ill I don't think its fair to stress her more. But if she's subdued because she's lonely then we ought to get another.

And according to dh when he found her she was lying on her side twitching and couldn't stand or move so it does sound like she's improved a lot.

Your guinea has been through alot in the last few days - maybe she didn't eat as much as her cagemate so though she had effects, it wasn't enough to kill her.
The mushrooms should be through her system now, they have pretty efficient digestive systems (I know when I give mine beetroot it comes out the other end in the form of burgandy droppings)

WRT a cagemate - she's still grieving and recovering (ours were alone for 6 days after their respective boar pairs died and they were fretful but a recovering guinea-pig will be subdued)

But at the age of 6-7 - you;d need to think, do you want a piglet (and be left with a young pig) an adult sow (and they might not get on) or a neutered older boar ( you might find one in Rescue, but he'll still be 'active' and might annoy her)
If you wanted to carry on with pigs, you could get a couple of piglets.
Or a adult that you could side by side if they didn't get on.

We got two adult sows to match with GP3 (we had him neutered) and it's working well. He was a year old when GP1 died. But they have their moments (my tiny little GP5 is like a Tasmanian Devil)

Maybe see how she gets on as a house-pig ( do you usually have them inside for winter? )

GalaxyInMyPants · 23/08/2014 11:32

Yes, was thinking maybe two younger pigs might be an idea.

Company but hopefully they won't annoy her.

We normally put the hutch in an outbuilding over winter, with a hutch hugger. I don't have space long term for an indoor cage.

We got two 8-week babies after our old pig lost her friend. The introduction was very funny -- both babies shot straight under her flanks and tried to suckle, to her astonished outrage I have never seen a more indignant look on a guinea pig's face.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2014 22:40

Kittie when we got 6 week old GP3 (boar) to pair up with our adult boar GP1, he did the same.

Shock and indignancy were two of the expressions that flit across GP1s face Grin

GalaxyInMyPants · 23/08/2014 22:41

That sounds funny. We rang a guinea pig place up today and they'll have young ones ready in two weeks.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2014 23:59

Aw, lovely (and lucky to find sows, there's been a few threads on here that most places have got boars at the moment)

You might get a couple of newly weaned piglets - or like our girlies, a couple of young pig mums who have weaned off their litters.

Hope your piggie continues to improve and gain strength. Smile

GalaxyInMyPants · 24/08/2014 07:41

Yes at the minute she's only got boars. But reckons some of the tiddlers will be big enough in two weeks to go.

We have new arrivals.

Oooh lovely - (I'm taking a leap in the dark here and assuming your black/tan is your older pig Grin )

Good to see all heads are down and they are scoffing grass .

It's weird to get a new piggie. piggies then after a very short while, they get their paws under the table and act like they've always been there.

Do you know anything about their history?

GalaxyInMyPants · 24/08/2014 17:19

Well they're from PAH. I know, I know......

The little white fluffy one has a funny eye. PAH nearly wouldn't sell her to me but after a closer inspection they reckon its just how she is rather than an infection. She can't open it fully, the manager reckoned her eyelid wont pull back or something.

She was the only fluffy one so we had her. She is quiter than the others and isn't running round much. I hope she can see ok. At times she looks like she has both eyes nearly closed, don't know if its an albino thing.

Will try and add a close up.

They're crap pics. MNer right eye is actually her good eye, but even that looks smaller than the other Piggy's eye.

Castlemilk · 24/08/2014 17:27

OP really sorry to hear of all your trauma but glad you've given another couple of piggies a lovely home. Hope they have long and happy lives!

kahori · 24/08/2014 17:36

Love the new arrivals.

GalaxyInMyPants · 24/08/2014 17:43

Bonding seems to have gone well. Can you see in this pic though how her eye seems smaller compared to the other little pig?

Devil dog has gone out and weeed over them all through the wire. Hmm

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/08/2014 17:43

They reckon albinos can see as well as a dark eyed pig, but I have my doubts. I mean, how can you accurately judge what a piggie can see?

We had a Himmy sow who had one sow piglet (white/Himmy) When the female got 'lost' she'd stand and screech, Mum pig would leave her two boar piglets standing there Confused Eh? while she ran back to her girl pig.

My present GP5 is a ruby eyed Himmy, first time in the run, she ran into the bars (3 times Sad )
GP3 has dark red eyes, his eyes are smaller than our other guineas (but no difference R>L )

DD and I were in P@H there were 3 sows in the Adoption bit needing "A Special Home" one looked like our GP4.............. it was hard to step away.

Best thing to do with your guinea is take a couple of photos on your phone every week or so to monitor. Then you'll have a reference point if anything does change?

GalaxyInMyPants · 24/08/2014 17:51

I'll think I'll take her down the vets for a check up next week. She's eating ok. But while the other little one follows the old girl about this one stays on her own most of the time. I wonder if she can't see them? But she'd be able to hear or smell them surely?

We've got to name them yet. I want to call one Womble but dd says no. I like Pumpkin as well but again dd not keen.

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/08/2014 18:06

Even if her vision isn;t as good, her sense of hearing and smell would be fine.
Everything is new to her - your cage and run, your pig and possibly her cagemate.

Our little Himmy is more aloof than her cagemate. GP3 (neutered) seems to have bonded well with GP4 and gets along well with GP5 but I can almost hear her say "Away 'n shite " at him Grin.
She's had piglets, she wants no more .

Weigh them too, it gives a good indication of their progress. And you should be allowed to name at least one of them.(I had this with my DD too. She didn't like my names)

They should've had a check up at the P@H vet before you got them?

GalaxyInMyPants · 24/08/2014 18:12

They only went on display this morning and the assistant said they were all health checked this morning. Dunno if that was by a vet or not.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/08/2014 14:35

How are the new babies today?

(DD and I always imagine when they wake up on the first day in their new home they'll be "Ooh where are we"? "Did we dream it"? "No, it's real, pinch me" Grin

MimsyBorogroves · 25/08/2014 15:04

Glad they're settling.

Re. the white one - is she pure white? If so, there is a possibility she may be what is known as a lethal white - a common feature being blindness/mismatched/missing eyes. They do have a number of health problems, but some can live amazingly long lives with support - see this thread here from Guinea Lynx - www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7156

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/08/2014 15:25

There's a Lethal White at the Rescue where I got my pigs Mimsy.

DD looked at it for a good few minutes , not quite putting her finger on what was amiss.
It was a pure white, tiny, sunken eyes (looked at first glance like they weren't there)
It needs very regular dental treatment.(Teeth grow inwards IIRC)
It wasn't for adoption, it was a Permenant resident there

I had a look at Galaxys pig on the photos, she looks a greyish white . I'm not sure how long a LW would thrive without very hands on care TBH, I don't think P@H would offer them out for rehoming unless the owner was made aware exactly what they were taking on. (Well, I would hope that's the case)

GalaxyInMyPants · 25/08/2014 16:32

I don't think she's a lethal, she's got some fur which is a big beige colour rather than been pure white.
