Unwell rabbit

One of my bunnies has suddenly gone all droopy and off her food.

She's been to the vet this afternoon and she had a very high temperature. She's had 3 jabs, no antibiotics as yet as the vet said that could mess with her gut.

She is back to the vet tomorrow but in the meantime does anyone know if there's anything practical I can do to help her?

I'm encouraging her to eat and drink but she's not taking much. She's generally an outside bunny and doesn't much like being handled normally so it's unusual to be able to be this close to her.

She's about 3 (rescue bun so not 100% sure) and she is spayed. She lives with her DH bun and I'm not super keen on splitting them up if I can help it although she has been separated today while he's been out in the garden.

Any advice, hand holds and grips gratefully received

No advice really been years since I had bunnies but is there any type of food she loves to eat?

HypodeemicNerdle · 11/08/2014 20:58

She normally loves the pellet food but isn't interested today, she's nibbled a couple of apple slices but not much else

Did the vet give you some Critical Care powder to mix with water and give via syringe? You can mix pellets with water to make a mash and try to get her to take that off a spoon or on a bit of apple.

Hope she's better soon - poor bun.

HypodeemicNerdle · 11/08/2014 21:58

No critical care but that sounds like something I should be asking for tomorrow.

I'm currently debating whether I should bring her in for the night so I can be close to her or if she's better staying with her husbun as she'll be more relaxed with him. She's hardly moved today so I'm really worried

Thanks for the mashed pellets tip, she's had a little bit and taken some syringe fed water so I feel a bit better that she's got something in her system

Hope she's okay this morning.

HypodeemicNerdle · 12/08/2014 21:40

Sadly not.

Been back to the vet for antibiotics and fluids. She's eaten a little bit of baby food (vet advised) but not much.

Back to the vet tomorrow but I've been warned if she's not perked up then it doesn't look good. She's in obvious pain around her stomach.

I'm preparing myself to have to make the shittest decision a pet owner has to make

So sorry to hear this. Hand holding and sending hugs Thanks. The Fernie family will keep fingers and paws crossed for an improvement overnight.

Thanks yes it is the hardest, most shittest decision to make as a pet owner.

But remember the better a day too early than a day too late when considering the next step for your rabbitty one. Sad

HypodeemicNerdle · 13/08/2014 11:33

Thanks both

I'm holding on to the 'better a day early' message, bunny hasn't eaten or drunk anything this morning. I've explained to the kids that today is the day and we've all had a big cry while cuddling her

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. Is there any reason for it? Has bun got gut stasis?

bit about it

FernieB · 14/08/2014 09:38

So sorry there was no improvement. Hope everything went smoothly and that her husbun is okay.

HypodeemicNerdle · 14/08/2014 11:24

Well apart from me crying at the vet, that was a bit embarrassing, it was as good as it could be.

Different vet who gave her another good look at, he couldn't find any obvious reason for her being so unwell, no gut twists or blockages that he could feel. I guess we'll never know what was wrong but I couldn't leave her suffering.

Not the ending I was hoping for but I'm relieved that she's no longer in pain

Glad she had a peaceful ending. You will have by no means been the first to cry at the vets (I have been in floods before). It's a difficult and brave decision to make. Hope you and remaining bun are okay.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/08/2014 11:42

Sorry about your rabbit.

I'm sure she knew how loved she was and was happy.

Sweet dreams little bunny x

Morethanalittlebitconfused · 14/08/2014 14:56

So sorry to hear that. It's a horrible thing to have to do

Hope bunny is hopping around amongst the dandelions and leafy veg happily

Oh Sad she's gone
Sometimes there's no knowing why. But as you say, you know your animal is ill, you try your damnest but sometime, it doesn't work.

Now you've got me thinking about that ghostly rabbit in Watership Down and I've never even kept a rabbit Sad
