Millie Pig has a sore eye

Millie going to vet at 5.45 tonight Sad

Noticed yesterday her left eye not so open and had a look. The white very red, no discharge. Couldn't find a syringe to flush it with cooled water boiled water so left well alone.

Had a good look at it today in strong daylight. The eye is also cloudy but she still has sight. I passed my finger in front of her eye and she blinked. She also squeaked, so also painful.

I think she is frightened of the other girls being near her. Wee is sprayed all up the hutch wall. I was definitely Millie because her bum was wet when I picked her up

Will report back later.

Aaaaw. Poor Millie Pig, do hope she gets on all right, could it have been a 'foreign body' in the eye aka a piece of hay? I did use cooled boiled water with a hint of bicarb for one of the girls which seemed to do the trick, lets hope it can be cleared up easily. Bless her. :)

Poor MilliePig.
If it's cloudy she's most likely scratched it on something.
Could be a hay piece (I've prised them out of our pigs eyes) or a claw?

Good Luck Piggie

Millie has a one week course of eye cream twice a day. She has scratched a big hole in her cornea. Ouch! Sad

She probably did it after I cleaned the hutch on a piece of hay. Millie Pig does like to go digging.

The vet had a good inspection of Millie as it was the first time she had seen her. The first thing she noticed was, what a big girl Millie is Blush. I said she is the size she came to us with and yes she does like her food. The vet weighed her and muttered 13... I'm guessing Millie is over 1300g then Blush Then the vet gave her a good squish Confused. Apparently she is not fat all over and asked me whether she pooped easily and regularly oh yes she does and does she wee ok oh yes indeed. Vet has put a note on record of her shape though she can not find anything sinister.

The vet also found a skin tag on Millie's left ear, hidden by all her fur. Finally she give her claws a clip. Millie has had a full MOT Grin

Once back in her travel box, Millie had to do some comfort eating. Vet amused to see me pull a celery stick out my coat pocket. I explained it was my special guinea pig coat Wink

Thank you all for your good luck wishes Smile

Maybe squidging to see if she was pg (which is just what you want , eh? )

It's hard to stop them digging in hay, it's one of their natural joys to bury themselves away from snakes/scorpions/wasps/ a.n.other foe that you put in their beds.

So eye-cream duty it is then.

Poor Millie Pig - hope she feels better soon. My boys have offered to do her hay foraging for her in future so she can avoid another trauma.

I always get 'vet mutters' when Smooth is weighed - he's just big boned Grin

fortifiedwithtea · 23/01/2014 10:14

I think Millie was being squidged to see if she was full of poo Hmm. Apparently vet had recently seen a boar her size that had needed dyna rod some powerful medicine to shift it Confused

Yeah Fernie, Fatimus was pretty 'big boned' as well Wink

So glad Millie pig has been examined and is doing OK, lots of comfort food needed after a trip to the vet Wink..... good ruse eh?

There are definitely two shapes of guineas though, the ,er larger type, who are by nature squidgy, and the er, skinnier type, who are more, er streamlined. Grin

Big boned eh?
Can I use the same excuse?

Update: Millie's eye is looking very good Smile

Millie has been letting me put the ointment in like a good girl she knows I mean business and is rewarded with a veggie treat straight after every time.

Millie is not a lap pig and gets quite fidgety after her treat and wants to explore. She made herself extra uncuddly today by letting off an evil cabbage fart . That ensured she went straight back to her hutch Wink

Glad to hear Millie is doing ok fortified, sounds like the vet trip got her sorted. NOthing like a methane smell to put you off cuddling them, I wonder if they can eat mint?? mine loved most herbs, but I have just started growing it here, it may well improve their breath!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/01/2014 16:38

Awww Evil Cabbage Fart

I reckon they store a portion of foul and noxious gas for such an occasion. (Our cat used to store a hairball to vom up onto our stairs when she was angry)

Good to know she;s on the mend Smile

I tried mint on our hogs ( I have a tub of garden mint ) They weren't impressed .

FernieB · 29/01/2014 19:34

Mine hate mint too. It's the only leafy thing I've offered that they actually ran away from.

Glad Milliepig is doing okay.

Had a check up at the vets tonight and took Coco along as company for Millie thinking she would be scared after the first visit. They met a rabbit who was a very lucky bun, recovered from Mixi and was having her inoculation jab.

Poor Westie that howled the whole time and a cat who turned round in her cage until she was completely hidden by her blanket.

My girls cuddled up together but were not so traumatised that they couldn't manage a whole stick of celery Wink

Millie's eye is nearly healed and I have to carry on with the ointment until Saturday night bugger and another check up Tuesday.

Took the opportunity for the vet to have a look at Coco. She weighs 1100g. He said she is a good weight and shape and has a lovely shiny coat. I asked were her hips ok as her legs stick out a funny angle. The vet is Belgian. He told me Coco's hips are fine, she just sits with her knees sticking out like John Wayne Confused He gave a demonstration of how she sits Belgian accent look like this, vet does his best impersonation of John Wayne legs guinea pig style Smile

Glad Millie and Coco the cowboy are doing fine.

I always meet lovely people and pets at the vets as well. The GPs quite like meeting dogs but Current Bun is more of a cat rabbit.

fortifiedwithtea · 01/02/2014 16:04

Made a mistake this morning. Put Millie's eye ointment in without preparing her a treat first. Feeling guilty I took Millie out to the garden and sat her on my knee.

I picked some grass. Guinea eyesight is not the best but worse smeared with ointment. Millie in her excitement to grab the grass, missed and took a chunk out the top of my index finger.

Ouch!!!!Shock It really bled a lot.

Now typing with 9 fingers Hmm

Last dose of ointment tonight. Hurray Smile

oooooooouuucccchhh

They are well armed teethwise aren't they. I think because they bite so rarely you tend to forget that they do have an incredible defence there.

That'll be a comfort to you when your finger is throbbing and bleeding "well they don't mean it". She's probably narked that she got skin not grass
"I am a vegetarian y'know"

(If one of my guineas bit DS manky teenager I'd be taking the pigs to the vets for a tetnus jab Grin
