Gerbil behaviour - mounting

DD1 lets the gerbs run round her bedroom most nights and so far apart from chewing her woggle and leaving large numbers of turds around all seems well. However we've seen one of them mounting the other, although they're definitely both male.
Is this normal dominance behaviour?

It is for guinea-pigs (I have a 3yo and a 6 month both male. The younger one kept trying to bonk his 'stepdad' pig )

They sorted it out (amicably, the odd snap and Heads Up ) and Peace Reigns.

It is a normal male thing.

I don't know about gerbils but male guinea-pigs would 'choose' to live in a hareem of females.
Male/Male isn't a natural state but providing there are no ladeez, it works well.
I'm sure gerbils would be a similar scenario.

Our gerbils do this- both male. They've been together for 18 months and are happy together at least until one finds a sunflower seed.
