Today our indoor rabbit Ozzy who was a grey and white dutch died. This is a celebration of his life. He was brought at 8 weeks along with his friend Woody. Then he had 3 wives, Sooty, Georgina and Smokey. This year he became great friends with Summer who found himself alone after his brother Jamie and sister Caramel died. Today after sleeping in my DD's bedroom where it is warmer he came downstairs for a run round the living room. Then he went out onto the lawn to see Summer and the other four rabbits. After 15 minutes my DD went to get him for his dinner and he was just lying on the grass. He must have just had a heart attack and died. He will be really missed but we have the comfort that he had the best life he could have had, he was never hungry, never lonely, human or rabbit, never cold and loved by everyone who met him. Also he never ever lived in a hutch.

Aww Bless his cottontail and RIP.

As you say, he sounds like he had a lovely, happy life. Company from rabbit friends. Freedom to express himself. Loving caring knowledable owners. (I often think animals suffer more frequently from ignorance than pure mistreatment)

I am heartened by him lying on the grass. It's natural for a rabbit to be out on grass to play and eat.
He must've thought "This'll do nicely".
Take comfort from it being quick.

Bye Ozzy.
To The Bridge.

Thank you for the kind words. We have just got our 23rd rabbit (another second homer) in thirty years. Ozzy always had the free range of our big garden but was always put away at night, he became a house rabbit on his 7th birthday because of his age, we didn't expect him to live until he was 9 years 10 months 1 day. I am not sure how I am going to cope with peeling the carrots for tea tomorrow as I always peeled the first one for Ozzy. My son who never hoovers, hovered the living room this afternoon and took out the indoor tray where Ozzy had his food and water so we wouldn't get upset seeing it empty. He also dug Ozzy's grave in the lawn next to his third wife Smokey. Thank goodness the veg plot is empty, Ozzy was the only rabbit we would allow to free range and help himself to anything he wanted to eat and to have a dig. Do you think we spoilt him ?

My guinea-pigs say you can't spoil them.
They have the RSPCA Five Animals Rights - only better.

Just looking at his age there, nearly 10 yo.
That's good going, vetran rabbit.

The peeling veg bit is hard though.
I had guineas as a child and for years I couldn't chop fruit without expecting a wheek Wheek chorus.

One of our boars never squeaked but he'd purr.
My new piglettly boy is a noisy so and so.

They leave a big space don't they?

Even though we have 5 other rabbits they live outside so we have to go and get them to bring indoors for a cuddle. When our last house rabbit died we had to change the furniture about and change the living room carpet as we was expecting her to come out from behind the chairs. My 34 year old DD is really upset as Ozzy loved to be cuddled by her and he used to lick her face but he never did it to anyone else. Last week he managed to get a chocolate out of a tin and stole a chicken dipper off the daughters plate when she got up off the sofa for a drink. She used to give him the crusts off her sandwich and he would eat them. We used to take him out in the car to the local park to see the ducks and geese, he loved it and we was going to do it today after dinner as the sun was shining but he died before we had the chance. Everyone calls us the mad rabbit family.

So sorry to hear about Ozzy. What a wonderful life and a fantastic rabbit. It's always difficult to lose a furry friend but it's good that it was quick and peaceful for him. My thoughts are with you.

fiverabbits · 30/10/2013 12:15

My DD and I had had a few chats about whether Ozzy was still enjoying his life and we are so glad we didn't have to take him to the vets and have him put to sleep, we have done this with 3 rabbits and it is awful. He was happy to the end. Today it seems so quiet here which is funny considering Ozzy didn't make any noise.

It's very quiet without them, I don't know how that works. When my Previous Bun went to lie under the big radiator in the sky the house felt empty and silent even though she barely said a word (except to grunt at anyone who sat in her chair). It's an odd feeling. I still expect her to charge at me grunting when I sit in that chair.

Ozzy clearly had a lovely and contented life and sounds like he was thoroughly spoilt. So much nicer to go in own time, in his own garden and so peacefully and quickly.
