Something got into my gorgeous piggies hutch last night. I am feeling so guilty. Did I lock the hutch properly? I don't know. All I know is that my girls are gone :(

Oh goodness, I am so, so sorry. This must be very hard for you, but even if you didn't shut the hutch properly, we are all only human and mistakes happen. It's not your fault. However, foxes are flipping clever and can open all sorts. I have also seen photos of them having chewed through a shiplap shed to get to bunnies, so sometimes there's just nothing you can do. I am so paranoid I have padlocks on my bunny sheds, but I still worry.

I think its lovely of him . Just a thought to make the hutch more fox proof ,on our rabbits hutch my DH put a holder at each end so we can put a bar right across the front IYSWIM , that way the doors won't swing open even if they're undone . We did it to stop our dog opening the hutch and its been brilliant . Have fun with your new piggies , my mum recently lost her ginger pig and its been very upsetting .

We have a wooden door, a screen door inside which hooks on (half wood, upper half screen) a bolt and a bucket of cement which I hoist in front of the door.

DH is Hmm but every night there are at least 2 foxes on a neighbours garage and the adults just don't seem spooked by anything .

Sleepingbunnies · 02/09/2013 21:41

I think iv got it wrong.

I don't think it was foxes.

I think they were stolen :(

What makes you think that ?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/09/2013 22:10

But that wouldn't explain the fur?

Was there damage to the hutch?
I can't see how there could be fur shed with a person lifting them, even the most cack-handed person.

(Gawd that sounds like a horrendous scenario to have them pinched) Shock

Sleepingbunnies · 02/09/2013 23:35

The fact that it's all so clean? No blood etc? Just several clumps of fur? The fact that even if I had fucked up and not shut one side surely I didn't not shut both sides?

No bite marks on cage, no claw marks nothing.

Am I going mad?! Am I overthinking this all too much?

Forgive me :( I take back my wild ideas that someone had taken them... I found evidence to suggest otherwise at about 1am this morning when I was 'investigating' :(

My poor babies :(

How horrible Sad Can your BIL search for remains and do a burial? It all sounds far too distressing for you and the DC to find Sad

Anyway you can keep the new arrivals indoors? They will never replace the S&P shaped hole in your heart but in time you will grow to love them for their own little ways. Agree BIL was being a bloke but a well meaning one Smile

Sleepingbunnies · 03/09/2013 10:35

Didnt find 'remains' just a bloodstain and fur in their Hidey house. And teeth marks :(

So DP thinks they should be outside as we always said they would live outside but I don't think I could go through this again.

I have found an indoor cage / stand on amazon but its £105 :(

could you look on ebay for a 2nd hand hutch for indoors or free cycle.

My GP lives in an indoor cage we bought in Lidl years' ago or could you bring them in at night in a wooden box or drawer or something and pop them in the kitchen for peace of mind then put them back out in the day.

alemci · 03/09/2013 10:42

had a quick look. don't know where you live? but there are some for collection starting at £5.
