Guinea pig fertility?

It's a sad day today, I put my boy piggie out in his run and went to move the girls to a fresh patch of grass but one didn't come out of the bed area :( sadly she was gone. No idea why, she was normal yesterday. I now have one male and one female and not really sure what to do. The female is about 4.5 years old and I have no idea how old the male is as he was a foundling. I don't really want to get another female at the mo but I'm feeling sad for my girly pig as she's used to company. Do GPs stay fertile all their lives? Would it be safe to put them together? Instinct tells me it's risky but would be interested to know if anyone has experience of this.

Sorry to hear about your piggy. It's always a shock. Hope the remaining girl is okay.

I wouldn't put them together but would have them side by side so they can chat.

Hi, very sorry to hear about your girlie, bless her, it sounds like she had a loved life though. Your remaining girl will be very sad and lonely and will probably pine, it is so sad for the last remaining one. She will need lots of attention and caring now, try and include her as much as poss, lots of tlc to keep her interested, as they do get very forlorn.

If you don't want to find her a companion, I really wouldnt put her in with the boy as fernie says, she will find this very stressful. Obviously she will be pining for company, she might find the boy's attention too much. I would be tempted to try and put them side by side, so that they can interact but not get to each other. She is a good age herself, and probably will have many more happy times with you, but if they boy hasnt been neutered you will certainly end up with a few more and she really is too old to be going through that!

Hope it all works out. :)

Thank you both. She has been really quiet today. DD gave her a brush and we moved Geoffrey's run next to hers so she could talk to him but she wasn't that bothered. I let her do some free ranging in the garden which usually ends up with us chasing around trying to get them back in the evening but I went out after a little while and she had put herself back to bed Sad.
I will make sure she's getting extra attention and hope she picks up, just awful to see them grieving.
