I would say no as mice have tails whereas hamsters don't. Hamsters make great little pets. What is it about mice that appeals to you?

LimitedEditionLady · 17/08/2013 20:21

Apparently theyre trainable and intelligent.its the tails that bother me too ha

My friend keeps pet rats and says they are intelligent and so much more interactive than hamsters, so if mice are like this I can see the appeal.

It's just the tails...

Rats are the best. Hamsters, like the inherited one I have now is sleeping. No good for a child. Very bad tempered if woken up too. Rats, friendly, fun, trainable, always willing to play. No contest.

I wouldn't keep mice as my fancy mice were pretty stupid, and smelt worse than either hamsters or gerbils. they are cute though and fun to watch. you need more than one for them to be happy really.

hamsters I'm biased about as I used to breed them. they do have varying personalities though, but our current hamsters are very tame and friendly. plus they dont mind the odd night being left alone if we dont bring them out. Syrians have to be kept alone.

gerbils are cute and funny to watch as they make burrows. very friendly when tamed, and you should keep a pair at least as they are sociable wee things.

rats are the best ones, but you need to give them time every day so they're happy. you need at least two so they dont get lonely. plenty of things to play with as they're smart wee buggers Smile

it really depends how much space you have and how much time you'll have to give them. plus how much interaction you're wanting.

I thought that mice were trainable more than say a hamster?you guys are great x

mice are trainable, you need to build their trust first which could take some time. bare in mind they have short life span.

i have mice and they are tame, if you want a small pet that you can train rats are your answer. not every ones first choice, but they train fast and give affection back.

hamsters are lovely but find they sleep too much, gerbils are easy to keep to.

check out some youtube clips on trained mice and rats :-)

oh and i have 7 (was 9) females in a large exo terra and they dont smell. males on the other hand... never again!

obv it also depends on how often they are cleaned as with any animal.

good luck with what ever you decide.

mice are great, so much fun just to watch. They play a game of 'how many mice can fit on one wheel?'

LimitedEditionLady · 15/09/2013 22:31

Mice are sweet- I had some when I was a teenager ( but I'm a guinea person really)

I got 2 boys. They absolutely stink . I had then a weekend [shamed face] and had to return them. The (excellant) pet shop owner exchanged them for 2 ladies.

All fine , we got a nice large cage. The blighters escaped (don't know how) up to my bedroom. I was away for the weekend , my mum was looking for them. They found a biscuit and I found them in a pair of dungarees on the floor.

My dad made a 3 storey mousehouse for them. With ladders.
They climbed up the mesh at the front , ignored the ladders.
Then one got a bit chubby.
6 babies.

They are really lovely. They'd be on one of the wheels tottering round. One of the adults got on an wheeeeee the mouselets clung on as it spun round.

We took the babies to the shop, but one escaped and lived in a kitchen cupboard until we caught him.

So. 2 ladies now,
They were lovely, the non mummy one would go in a cardigan pocket curled up.
The mum mouse got a tumour and it got big enough to impact on her life, so we had to have her PTS Sad
Remaining mouse lived a few months alone but she was one you could carry round.
They do pee and pooh all the while but girls don't smell.
Ours didn't bite (except the escapee when I caught him)

They walked along our arms upside down. Whip you with their tails.
Loved food.
Ran their wheels at 3am.

They are fun, but I like a nice chunky guinea pig boar Grin
