I know it sounds absurd but the situation is bloody awful. My friend lives with his sister in a mortgaged house, he is autistic and can just about take care of himself. HIs sister has a rabbit (Large) living in a hamster cage in a shed at the bottom of the garden. She doesn't feed her, my friend does and the rabbit gets zero attention and zero free-running time. there isn't even one hops worth of space in the 'cage;. I have repeatedly told my friend to do something but he cannot afford a larger cage and is afraid that his sister will 'kick off' re: rehoming so wont address the situation. As I have already talked to both my friend and his sister and been ignored I know they will automatically blame me if I phone the RSPCA. I have two bunnies of my own (absolutely adored, indoor bunnies) and would gladly take on another. I can't sit back much longer, advice please???

Take it or call the RSPCA. All I can think of is the poor bunny

VAVAV00M · 09/08/2013 23:31

Get yourself a pet cage > do it in the early hours > pretend you just got back from holiday > sell free to good home saying it is an elderly relatives who can't no longer keep it for reason X

VAVAV00M · 09/08/2013 23:33

*pretend you just got back and collecting from someone if asked

MissMarplesBloomers · 09/08/2013 23:36

I'm afraid I'm totally disillusioned with the RSPCA although I have always thought they do stirling work in the past. Recently I have needed advice & back up, totally bloody useless.

Now if i had money to help an animal charity I would give it to a local rescue centre they're always needing help & a little goes a long way.

Admiral good luck....we have your back Grin

AdmiralData · 09/08/2013 23:39

I appreciate your help and support :D I just found a massive rabbit hutch for£12.00 ...

What a sad thread this is:( Feel so sorry for the bunny:( Please help it if you can, but definitely stage some kind of break in/fox got the rabbit scenario to watch your own back. Also, please be wary about telling your friend what you are doing incase he feels the need to admit what you have done to his sister!
This is such a kind thing that you are doing, and if you live anywhere Dorset then I can perhaps help you re-home the poor little mite as I volunteer at a fabulous charity based in Dorset that re-homes dogs, and small furries:)
As for the RSPCA, another one here that wouldn't give them a penny of my money. They really are a national disgrace with all the animals they kill, and the blind eye they so often turn because of not wanting to infring on human rightsAngry There are a few small, individually run branches of the RSPCA which are independent that don't do this, but they will state very clearly on their website that they are independent of the national run RSPCA,and do not PTS healthy animals. But you really are better off sourcing out local, smaller animal charities and helping them. It will be much appreciated believe me:)
As for the bunny, yes please let us know if any help is needed, one of us on here may live close enough so can help care, re-home him for you:)

NandH · 10/08/2013 08:34

Where are you admiral ?

guineapiglet · 10/08/2013 09:05

Would love to help you out admiral your plan is something I have always wanted to do. If you are anywhere near hants let me know. Do search freecycle in your area for equipment such as cages and runs. You can also post on there for stuff you are looking for people are always getting rid of stuff like bowls, water bottles etc. our local friendly farmer would deliver us a huuuuge bale of hay for a fiver. Gum tree is another good source for cheaper used equipment. If you need any help let me know!

I have had positive dealings with the RSPCA over the years and had two wonderful friends who were inspectors who worked bloody hard. Lately though in my dealings with rescue animals I would be more inclined to rely on local rescues/animal sanctuaries to donate to - they work hard on the ground so to speak and every penny goes a long way with them.

thwinka · 10/08/2013 09:13

Me to guineapiglet I would love to take abandoned animals in. I am limited with what I can help but small furries wouldn't be a problem!! Lets hope she is near us as if I remember right we don't live to far apart either? ( you offered a lot of support for me when my piggy was very poorly a couple of months ago:) )

guineapiglet · 10/08/2013 09:22

Hi again! Yes thwinka. I am about 10 miles north of southamton and am happy to offer guinea care if needed anywhere near me!

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2013 09:44

Signing in to help, am 25 miles south of Southampton

Good luck! Thanks

AdmiralData · 10/08/2013 10:28

I'm in South Wales. My friend has told me he is telling his sister that I have threatened him with RSPCA so she had best give me the rabbit. She'll never speak to me again (unfortunate as she is actually a really nice girl) but hurray :D

Thanks for all your answers re. RSPCA. I am going to look around and find somewhere else where to donate my money. I wish I could take in more animals, but it is just not possible. If you have a charity/animal sanctuary that you support and that has a website please could you pm me? I'd like to check it/them!

FernieB · 10/08/2013 11:24

Been reading this thread with a tear in my eye for the poor bunny, but also a smile at all the wonderfully supportive and caring SFA lovers out there.

I am in agreement about the RSPCA and would support P@H adoption before them.

Admiral - I hope you get the bunny and he won't believe his luck! Let us know how it goes and how he settles with you.

guineapiglet · 10/08/2013 12:08

We used to live in cheshire there was a fabulous animal rescue up toeards buxton, called windyway. Brilliant place. Always glad of donations. There is also a wild animal rescue called lower moss wood near knutsford. They went way beyond the call of duty for me when i rescued a baby kingfisher from the jaws of next doors f@#%ing cat...... These kind of hands on places ate well worth funding!

guineapiglet · 10/08/2013 12:10

Towards
are well worth

Sorry am on phone

hurrah admiral!
Hope the bunny is in your safe hands soon xx

Tiredemma · 10/08/2013 12:14

RSPCA piss me off.

In our old house (two years ago) we reported the family over the back for keeping their dogs in appalling conditions. They did Sweet FA.

I have it on good authority however that when the 'owners' went away for the weekend (leaving said dogs without food in the back garden), that a couple of local blokes took the dogs and apparently got them to a local kennels where they were looked after and then re-housed.

wokeupwithasmile · 10/08/2013 14:02

Thanks a lot for all this info everyone, I am going to look at them all and divert my money from the RSPCA. Blissful ignorance, I was hoping to be doing something good and did not know about all these awful experiences you had.

Fingers crossed that little bunny will soon be in safe hands.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 10/08/2013 14:37

im in south wales too. i wish i could help and adopt her, but we dont drive, live in a rented house and have no grass in our garden Sad

one day i am going to live in a house and be known as crazy animal lady Grin

oh and thanks for the info about RSPCA. never knew they were so bad! was going to start donating to them too but i wont now. will try and find a local one instead

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/08/2013 15:40

Operation Bunny Rescue will have a positive conclusion Grin

Fingers crossed !

AdmiralData · 10/08/2013 21:49

My friend agreed to confront his sister. His mother has apparently stepped in and said that due to my threats of RSPCA I wont be having the bunny, she is taking her back to the original owners. I am a) dubious of this and WILL be checking and b) gutted, I really wanted her to live with me :(

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/08/2013 22:04

Very frustrating but hopefully the rabbit will have a better quality of life than it has now.
Maybe the mum has been guilt-tripped into doing something (anything) before the RSPCA gets involved.
I don't suppose they'll let you near to take photos now Angry

AdmiralData · 12/08/2013 22:20

Im going to 'surprise' my friend with a visit and as I smoke occasionally will casually say 'oh I'll just nip out the back for a fag :)'. If he has lied I will update you all with the wrath that I will wreak x

thwinka · 20/08/2013 14:03

Any news on the poor bunny AdmiralData ? Hopefully he is having a better quality of life now:(

AdmiralData · 20/08/2013 21:03

thwinka she has been rehomed apparently. I had my dmil drive into the lane behind the house to check but the garden gate and shed were locked ... it was always open when bunny lived there so hopefully she really has been rehomed :) x
