Help Hamster has escaped...

bergedorf · 08/08/2013 07:45

We are looking after a friend's hamster. Last night I thought I hadn't seen him for a bit so I opened the sleeping compatment to check he was still there.

It seems I didn't close it properly and this morning I came down and he's escaped.

I feel absolutely dreadful. The study door was open so he could in theory be Anywhere in the whole house.

Are there any secret Mumsnet tips in helping find an escaped hamster? Please??

My wee hamster went missing regularly, once we found her in an old set of drawers in the back of a walk in cupboard, and once she was in the sofa.....

It will turn up, eventually

ginmakesitallok · 08/08/2013 21:25

Oh and mine loved hard boiled egg

bergedorf · 08/08/2013 21:38

yes our hamster used to climb right up the curtains to the top Grin

It must have been in there the whole sodding day??

I have just finished decorating the entire house with bits of cucumber, feta, corn on the cob and carrots.

I was thinking about boiling some eggs.

I have Four bucket traps set up with food lovingly placed all the way up.

The IN SEASON dog has been allowed upstairs for the first time IN HER LIFE and was settling down to bed in my son's room. She's a year old. There'll be no going back.

Cheers all round all you GORGEOUS mumsnetters.

The hamster is SAFE!!

I'm exhausted, drained and ever so slightly deflated.

I was planning my night on the floor in the sitting room. It felt like a proper secret service operation.

My son says the hamster is like Houdini. I think he's right.

Sorry I know this does not help but totally PMSL at you creating a hamster trap round the whole house and the bugger was probably in its cage oblivious the whole time.

But glad s/he is safe Smile

Caster8 · 08/08/2013 22:42

Cant say I am surprised that he is in his cage.
I was going to ask you to check, but since you are a stranger, I thought better of it.
It is surprising how hidden they can be. They like to curl up somewhere, underneath something.

Birdy28 · 08/08/2013 22:52

Glad he's safely tucked up again!

They really are quite sneaky when they want to be. I can't Count the number of times ours would let himself out and have a wander no matter what we tried to keep the door shut.

Luckily for us he was too fat and lazy to fend for himself when he escaped clever enough to always put himself back to bed as long as we left his cage somewhere he could climb to and near where he left it. Sometimes he would let himself out and then come and find us.

It was not uncommon to suddenly find a hamster on your lap or sat on your foot when he decided to explore and couldn't be arsed to find the cage himself wanted to say hi!

He was a cool hamster Grin.
