Fresh food for GPs

pinkbear82 · 06/08/2013 09:23

We have just adopted two GPs and while there is loads of advice out there I want to know from people that actually have and love their GPs what fresh food you let them have. Last thing I want to do is risk giving them anything they shouldn't have.
Any tips and advice welcome, the more knowledge the better.

Many thanks Smile

Mine love parsley, tomatoes (cut out the seeds), carrots, baby corn, salad leaves (but don't give them iceberg - apparently toxic to GP's).

Broccoli, spinach, sprouts also good.

And a slice of cold cucumber also good, especially on hot days - Guinea pig equivalent of an ice lolly apparently!

Carrots, parsley, tomatoes, spinach, celery and its leaves, cucumber, broccoli, pepper and my lavender bushes which are by their run Grin

Grin At the lavender!!

Thank you. I shall make a note and see what they like, carrots were put in this morning so hopefully that's a bit of a treat for them...have a feeling they'll eat more salad than me Wink might make me a bit better with it.

Congrats on the new additions to the family. Lots of good information on guinea pig nutrition can be found here www.guinealynx.info/diet.html

Thank you for that link, very helpful.

My gp's favourites are spinach, parsley, coriander and cucumber. They also really like peppers and leafy stuff like brocolli/cauli leaves and salad (as already said, not iceburg).
I get so excited when I go to my local Morrisons and they sometimes have a HUGE bag of salad leaves from the salad bar that is reduced to 39p or some other ridiculously cheap price!
I try and vary things so will get spring leaves, little gems, sweetheart cabbage etc. as the base, and then add the other stuff as the treats.

They'll sort of tolerate carrots, but that's always left till the end, till they're starving!

The salad mix I gave them earlier in the week, Italian bistro salad, went down well (reduced to 19p - bloody marvellous). I nearly had heart failure the next day when there was pink wee in the litter tray. Wasn't till a bit later when I realised there was beetroot in the salad. Beetroot = pink wee. Phew!!!

Congrats on getting your piggies. Are they boys or girls? Inside or outside? Enjoy them x

Thanks curly! 2 little boys, they are outside, but want to change their hutch for one with a run underneath, feel they would be much happier with that, especially as they get used to being handled.

Can I ask what you use for a litter tray, I'm keen to introduce one but size wise haven't seen anything suitable. Where abouts in the hutch do you put it?

Carrots and lettuce are a hit so far. Introducing slowly to be careful of their little tummies. Loving having them so far!!

Lovely, 2 boys. We've got girls but there is a lot of love on here for having boys!
Our outside run has a hutch on top but the ramp is too steep for the pigs so we've removed it. I think that's the safest thing to do for us until I work out how to make it less steep. As they sleep inside I don't think it's so important for them to have a hutch (I put hidey houses in the run for them).
I just bought a really cheap cat litter tray from a pound shop type place. It's literally just a plastic tray. Inside I use puppy pads to line their cage so I use a small piece of puppy pad to line the tray, with a handful of hay on top. They don't do all their wee's in it, but the majority of it. They still poo everywhere, my grass is covered outside in the run. I've started a post about that cos it's driving dh mad...
x

Ah thank you, I shall give that a go and see how they get on, in the cage they. Re in at the moment I have made a toilet corner which seems to be used, but not sure if that's just fluke!

Looking forward to them becoming more settled and happier being handled a little more and them settling into becoming part of the household. x
