Has anyone had this breed? Also any tips on settling him when we get him home. Do we leave him alone and quiet or keep him close so he's not lonely? Thanks for any ideas.

GP 3 of 8 was half rex, half coronet and was about 10 weeks old when I got him. Is he on his own or did you get him as a companion to another pig?

It's always best to leave a new pig to get used to new surroundings for at least a day or two, making sure there is plenty of dry food that they are used to, veggies that they like and water (in a bowl or sipper bottle, depending on what they know.)

Unless there is a specific reason (i.e. quarantined due to illness, companion has died, lone boar of a litter not yet paired with another boar, etc.) guinea pigs shouldn't be on their own. Let us know a bit more info and folks here will help.

I always recommend www.guinealynx.info/ for all sorts of info on guinea pigs. Best of luck!

Is mini rex a rabbit or a guinea pig?

I know there are breeds of both that are rexs (but I'm not a bunny keeper. They're the long eared binkying ones aren't they? Grin )

Oh forgot to say rex is an 8 week old rabbit! Think he will be an indoor bunny.

Indoor buns are the best things ever I am biased as I'm on my second. If you could possibly have 2 it's better for them as they love to have other long eared friends to talk to.

Basically let him settle in his area for a day and then start chatting to him when you feed him etc. rabbits don't like being picked up but love being stroked. It is better, however, if you can get him used to being handled from a young age. Rabbits are very intelligent (except my Current Bun) and can be trained to come when called and do tricks although they learn better when they are a bit older. Young buns are quite silly and be prepared for a lot of chewing. He must be able to have a lot of room to run around, they need loads of exercise.

Have lots of fun - I'm so jealous (I'd have another 4 rabbits if I could) Grin

Whoops! (Off to google mini rex buns!)

Thanks all for replies-have got a lovely silver boy and his sister came too, she's black. Couldn't get just one. however they are not pure bred rex, but cross breeds. Having driven over an hour in this heat I wasn't going to leave without buying and they are healthy and cute!

So, so jealous. Enjoy them, they are wonderful.

Just one extra thing - please get them neutered as soon as they are old enough (for the sake of their health) and also they do need vaccinations every year.

They may seem timid when you get them home but will soon be in and out of everything. My previous bun used to inspect the contents of any shopping bags (and have a good chew). Current Bun is more into socks and will spend hours wrestling any that he finds.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/08/2013 22:03

Are you having a bout of "Bunny Envy" there Fernie? Grin

FernieB · 03/08/2013 22:19

70 - I am so jealous. I would love more bunny's but the family would like a dog so I think it's not going to happen.

I really miss the baby bun stage as well - I did not get this with Current Bun as he was a rescue and already an adult and set in his ways. It's taken nearly 2 years to get him to the stage where he will approach me to be picked up and he now knows to go to bed when I turn the light off. I love him dearly but he had a rough start on life and it's affected him.

It's easier to get a baby bun used to being handled (although I wouldn't attempt training until they were at least 1). It would have been previous bun's birthday tomorrow - I had her from a baby and she was so well trained and obedient and very protective of me. Buns are very rewarding - she was my constant companion for 4 years. Sorry I'm going on a bit so I'll stop now.

Am definitely having them neutered, think at 4 months? am very worried they will be up to rabbit business! they are sooo friendly and little boy will sit on my lap already. Anyone know what neutering may cost?
