guinea pigs on leads

does this work? DD spotted leads for the piggies in the pet shop but I think it would be a waste of money. Would they not freeze and panic?

ours would totally freak out outside - maybe ok round the house as a bit of a gimmick - but our piggies do not like being out in the open..

cornyblend37 · 21/07/2013 09:12

I think they'd be too scared as well
plus a big dog would eat them!

FernieB · 21/07/2013 09:16

I've seen these - they have a nice padded harness with them - and I've also wondered if anyone uses them. I think it would depend upon the pigonality of the GP. I can see that my Scruffy would not really notice and just carry on pootling about, but Smooth would freeze in shock. As they pretty much just mow the lawn I think it would be quite dull just standing there in one spot waiting for them to move to the next patch.

We have a lead for our rabbit, Current Bun, but he's hopeless on it. He either winds himself in and out of the legs of the garden furniture or decides that he's going to sit in a flowerbed and give himself a thorough wash! Then just when you're not paying full attention he darts off for a big sprint at full speed. Wink

I got pestered into buying one. My piggies didn't like it at all
I think they naturally like to hide don't they

fishandlilacs · 21/07/2013 09:34

Titch would probably be ok, but would be boring as you say because he's essentially an eating machine,
Chester would probably freeze and hope that a hole in the ground would appear.

I have one for my piggies! Although only one will sit still long enough to put it on, he's then happy to wander around the garden looking for grass. Although he keeps close to sheltered areas for the protection.

Saying that, he is the calmest little thing you'd ever meet, and the other three hate it. I don't think it's often that they are very keen. Smile

tried with one piggie once and he went crazy. did not like it. Most GPs don't do leads. they go where they want to go.

we once wasted money on a giant ball and they didn't like that either. the are not hammies.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2013 09:43

My DD keeps picking leads up in The Range (for rabbits/ferrets/guineas.

I cannot, in any parallel universe, see the hogs tolerating that.
GP1 would give me a Hmm look and GP3 would wind upup like he was a reel of thread Grin

BTW fishandlilacs our lardy GP1 is called Chester too Wink

We bought two and however tight we put them (and it probably wasn't tight enough cos you don't want to hurt them!) the little buggers just wriggled right out. It was a fine strategy....wait till you're taken out of the run, puff yourself up and let yourself be strapped in, then as soon as you have the full run of the garden.....make yourself skinny again and escape!

They never went very far though, don't know what to make of freedom Grin if guins ever plan out a strategy, I'm not sure they have the foresight to plan out the next stage after that.........

Guinea pigs aren't nice trotting dogs, they have a wild side Gin I don't see the point, except that it would be so cute......

Maybe if you have a very, very placid pig who's not used to the outdoors and can't fathom all the delicious escaping potential out there......

As for our current pigs (given up on the leads, wouldn't try them), my grey pig is so smooth and slim that he would be a great wriggle-outer, and my black piggy would not like it one bit because he's getting old and you can feel his bones more now- just wouldn't be comfortable.
They are nice leads though.....soft and they have little printed carrots all over.

quirrelquarrel · 21/07/2013 11:37

Gin haha!

alemci · 21/07/2013 11:45

definitely free range and good at wriggling out of spaces. they always amaze and entertain me in their own individual ways. wonderful, wonderful animals.

yamsareyammy · 21/07/2013 11:49

Doesnt work well in my opinion. Rabbits are a little better, but again, not fantastic.
Havent seen the new leads though.

guineapiglet · 21/07/2013 18:36

I have seen these and thought ' yeah, right...' How long before they wriggle out and escape, they don't have shoulders so that should be a quick escape!

My main worry would be dogs and cats out on streets, in parks or the like, but maybe ok in back garden. But I can visualise that, left in the hands of small kids they would be used as reins and the guineas would be pulled everywhere against their will and strength.

I have seen rabbits and ferrets on leads. Guineas? No. Just. No. :)
