New baby piggie?

We have 2 sows. They are 4 years old. They have a massive hutch, more than big enough for 4 guineas!

I was thinking the other day that obviously when the sad time comes that one of them dies ( :( ) the other will be left.

So, given we have the space would it work to buy a baby guinea pig now? Or will it upset their very nice life they have now just the two of them? I wouldn't want them to fight etc. And haven't got enough money for another hutch although do have an indoor run where other pig could be kept but then she would be on her own and thats not really the point!

So would you wait until the inevitable happens or get one now? I am thinking of adoption corner at PAH because I HATE seeing the miserable piggies in there :(

Hi sleeping.
The trouble with 2 well established and middle-aged female guineas is they will be quite set in their ways.

Many years ago I had a Mum/Sow piglet (both Himalayans) and I bought another young female. The older sow hated her, made her life very uncomfortable. We side-by-sided them. It quickly became apparent that new pig was pg. Result, one female piglet.
So we had twp groups of mum/pig.
The older Himmy sow hated the two new ones even more Hmm
It was ok if we kept them in their pairs.
When the old girl died, her adult piglet got on fabulously with the 2 new girls.

In your shoes I'd keep your girls as they are until one goes. They'll accept the company more readily if they lose their cagemate (you could get 2 female piglets if you wanted)
Bear in mind at their age they might go close together.

Something I'm trying NOT to think about too much with our boys (they will be 3 in October).I'm kind of hoping they go together but not for a very long time yet.

I take it the single male guinea-pig you were after was a no-go? Sad

My daughter saw a gorgeous lone male tri-colour boar in Leeds.
He was a gorgeous, bouncy, popcorning little boy.
I had to drag her out of the shop
"Your boars would NOT thank you dear"

Baby #3 not an option for me. I've shut the shop IYKWIM, 47yo this week.

Don't think DH and I could cope with another 7 years of school drop/pick up. My baby is off to Secondary in Sept Smile

Happy Birthday 70 I knew you were the same age as me. The dungaree comment gave it away Grin.

Sleepingbunnies if I were you, I'd leave your sows as they are. Remember my Old Boy lived to over 6 years, so yours could have along time just Smile.
