What a shocking day - looked out at the run and there were two little piggies?

I have had my 2 girl guineas for 4 years, got two more in September from a pet shop, made sure I asked for 2 more girls.. well guess what... I've just had a mad panic and been prodding and poking my new girls from the shop and they have willies!!

So my other girl could potentially be pregnant.

I've now got the two boys in one hutch, the one girl in other hutch and the mum and babies in my bath, under a cover on a towel.

Based on the fact my two girls get on well do you think mum and babies would be OK going in with the other girl, seeing as she may well be pregnant too??

Any idea what age I have to take the babies aways from mum?

Hee heee. I think its' because we love the squeaks, most piggie owners are dog owners too!

Oooh, yes Guinea-Pig people are lovely Smile

My little vegetarian hogs with their neat, inoffensive pooh (good for the garden too) and their charismatic ways are a delight to share a home with.

That's from my Essex Boars . shuuuuuuuut uuuuuuuuuuup.
WellJell innit ??

We welcome somerset piggies too!! I've found a home for my mini pigs, does anyone have advice on separating them out from mum?

Do I take them away bit by bit over a few days / weeks and then give them to new owners? so they get used to being apart or do I just one day swoop in a take them? I feel so mean...

I've read up a bit that about 4/5 weeks they are OK to go, they are in the food bowl and eating veggies already. When do I know they don't need mummy pig?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2012 19:46

Hi going .
I found the mum pig got fed up with her piglets Wink as she weaned them.
They were busily chomping away at solid food and veg, but when they went up to her to feed (mainly for comfort really) ,she walked off instead of standing and allowing them to feed.
(Considering GP are born with teeth I think they are very brave and tolerant mums already) Grin

You could try seperating them for a couple of hours at first, then longer. It'll give the sow some peace as well.
Then she'll fret less and they'll get more independant. It won't take long for them to get used to it.

So Xmas Envy of your new pig owners.Baby piggies are so sweet.

Have you managed to sex the baby piglets? If they are males maybe take them away at 4 weeks, the get sexually mature quite early.
(I'll have a look at some sites and check the recommended age. One site I read said 3 weeks but I'm thinking that's quite young)

What are you doing with your original PetShop Boys?
Are they still narky with each other?
Are they together or seperate?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2012 19:53

Three sites say remove boys at 3 weeks or 400g

So I stand corrected, it's not too early.

They should be well into their solid food by then.

LittlePig was weaned at 3 weeks. He came to me at 5 and had been in with his dad for two weeks.

SantaKissedBonkeyMollocks · 09/12/2012 20:05

And i have heard they can potentially breed at 3 weeks Shock

goingupinfairylights · 09/12/2012 20:10

arhh thanks for that - My boys seem to be getting on better they were snuggled the other morning "Petshop boys" I like that - I'm still not sure, the pet shop have said they will have them back, but I'm thinking I may keep them and just take it in turn for run time with the bunnies.

My two DS are upset about the mini pigs going - But no I still haven't sexed them, but I have promised them to a lovely family, so I hope they are being serious, I plan on asking outright this week so I'm not messed about.

They all had a good clean out on saturday and were in house, so I should of had a poke nd looked at the mini pigs but I was rushing to get their beds and hutches all clean as I now have 3 big places to clean with the rabbits as well as all the piggies I feel like a zoo owner!!

Most of my morning was spent walking dogs, brushing dogs ferrying piggies around so I could clean out runs, hutches and then finally having a shower to go out.

OK need to sex them they are 10 days old now.

[walks away muttering & shaking head]

goingupinfairylights · 09/12/2012 20:18

Oh I'll put some up... never done photos before give me 5...

goingupinfairylights · 09/12/2012 20:24

Right they are on FannyFifer come back... mummy pig is the golden girl, the other one is aunty pig.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2012 20:34

I clicked on the picture with my 10 yo DD standing next to me .
She loves the little agouti with the white stripe (her boar is golden agouti so it's what he would have looked like as a pigling- without the stripe) Grin

Soooooooooo cute Smile - they are such lovely babies (even if they were a bit of a shock)

FannyFifer · 09/12/2012 21:28

Yay! GrinGrinGrin
They are so cute, love the wee stripy brown & black one.

We have a rabbit but he is nearky 7 and he is far too set in his ways to introduce a piggie.

Love the wee sound they make though its the best little squeaky noise ever.
