Low allergen bedding for guinea pigs

My two boars live in a hutch in their shed in summer (on the lawn on dry days) and indoors in winter. Dd and I sneeze like mad when we buy hay and take it home in the car. Can we buy anything else for winter? Hay is only part of the problem for me, as I'm also allergic to the piggies, but they're not going anywhere and I think having less hay around might help.

Hay is a major part of a piggies life.
It can't be replaced!
They need it to eat, love to snuggle in it etc.

Could you just put hay in racks and give them shredded paper to snuggle in?

Would that help?

Shredded paper is probably the least allergenic (but make sure it's very fine, tiny strips. We have 2 shredders in the house. One household and one that cuts 'confetti' style for the piggles.I only give them paper that I would let them eat though).

Hay cookies might be better than loose hay.Probably more expensive but less wastage.
Mine didn't approve of Excell Cubes (blackcurrant flavoured)

I bought Equine Readigrass ( very short cut, much greener than hay with a slightly malty smell).
It was recommended on one of the equine sites as suitable for furries.
GP1 loved it om nom nom nom. It made GP2 sneeze.

Allergic guinea? Bless!

Thanks for the advice. I should have said that I wasn't going to exclude hay completely. It's more the pulling it out of the bag, having it go everywhere and sneezing/itching faterwrds, than the actual presence of hay, if that makes any sense. Actually, hay itself is a problem, but if I wasn't flinging it about, it would be less of a problem!

I did try them on fleece, but removing their hair to wash the fleece set me off more than anything.

I use Aubiose hemp bedding for my rats. You'd probably have to check with someone who knows about guineas that it's ok for them too, but it's really great stuff, and cheap, especially if you can get it locally. I can't so I have to pay postage but it still works out quite cheaply. Do check you''ve got the right brand, some are slightly scented and that's not great for small animals.
