puds11 · 26/07/2012 21:44

Just went out to feed and water my rabbit, and he was flopped on the floor, and didnt react to me until i picked him up. He normally freaks out as soon as the door is opened.

Do you think its the heat? Has anyone elses rabbits been a bit lacklusture today?

Rabbit is in hospital, he didnt eat anything or poo, so i took him in. I hoping he got in early enough. I will get a call at about 4 to tell me how he is progressing Sad He is a trooper.

Ok, bunny update! Spoke to the vet this morning and bunny has started eating and pooing again, which are all good signs! He has a wee temperature, but should be getting a phone call in the afternoon to tell me when i can go get him Smile

Good news bunnypud

'Tis a stressful time for SFA owners- one week of sun (well 45 days here) and they are pegging out with the heat.
We've got August and September to come....

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/07/2012 12:30

thats 4-5 days not 45 ! Blush

I don't live in the Sahara Desert. !

puds11 · 28/07/2012 16:26

Grin 70
He is back now and have a snoop round the garden. He has to have medication for the next 3 days but im hoping he makes a full recovery! I am going to be much more vigalent with his diet to help avoid this happening again.

What advice did they give you puds11 to keep him cool?

I've got 2 GP boars and it's a balancing act to keep them cool.
Mine don't drink water, though they always have it.
If they have a day in the run, (nice and breezy, they have a shower curtain over the top as a shade. It was wafting about so I know they were getting a nice breeze. Plus boxes for shade)
But they can't have too much veg after grass. I gave them cucumber and celery, but only a tiny bit.
Lots of hay- but that makes them warm

The real fur coat. Non negotiable in their eyes.

It's only a small step from cool to chill

Confused
puds11 · 28/07/2012 18:50

They didnt really give me any advice to keep them cool i said i was doing the water bottle in the freezer thing and they were happy with that. They told me more about how to change his diet to help reduce chances of this happening again.

Having said this ive just been to pets at home and they sell these

Puds - So glad he has made such a good recovery, what did they say regarding his diet?

puds11 · 30/07/2012 21:17

They said that 95% of his diet should be hay, and the rest rabbit food. I never knew the % of hay was so high, and to be quite honest he doesnt really eat much of it. They did say that dandelions were great for the gut.

I read on one thread it was an eggcup ful of pellets for a rabbit and minimal vegetables. The rest hay/grass.

Do you give unlimited hay when they've had a load of grass? Or will they just eat till they burst?

I give the GPs a handful of pellets daily (fresh daily it loses it's VitC)
and daily changed hay (enough to cover them)

Lots of waste though but better than fighting for the last nugget Grin

puds11 · 30/07/2012 21:57

Yes thats what the vets said. He doesn't appear to have bothered with his hay, but he has eaten the dried dandelion stuff i gave him. He's a greedy piggy when it comes to sweeties though! I have to ration him or he would just eat the whole pack in one! He currently is getting them after he takes his medicine, because he doesnt like it and i cannot blame him as im pretty sure im getting most of it up his nose Confused

Glad your bun has made a recovery. I didn't know the % of hay was so high for them. My previous bun was not a hay eater - just didn't like the stuff. Current bun loves it - he only eats a small amount of pellets each day and a load of hay and the GP's parsley if he can steal it without anyone noticing. He doesn't like dandelions though!

puds11 · 31/07/2012 17:59

Grin at current bun. Not sure if that was intentional.

I was shocked at the % aswell. My bun is just not into hay!

OP posts:
alistron1 · 31/07/2012 20:41

I think even though they don't appear to gobble up their hay in one go they do chomp on it throughout the day, I'd say my boy bunny does eat mostly hay ;) Glad your bun is better, I have made a mental note of the hot water bottle in the freezer technique ;)

Canidae · 01/08/2012 00:02

Do you have a litter tray? I found that buns like to have a snack while on the loo and often nibble hay then?

puds11 · 01/08/2012 10:38

Yeah he has a toilet and he usully eats out of his bowl whilst he is on there. Ive been putting dandelions in his bowl so i think he is snacking on them.
