Do you put your guinea pigs in their run raining weather?

Ours are babies and today is torrential showers here, their run is under shelter but I would imagine it still isn't protected from the rain today but seems wrong being in hutch all day.

Ps are those without door hutches covering them up?

With a tarpaualan cover over the run to keep it dry, yes, not when it's heavy though & ground will get soaked. Gotta keep the inside of hutch itself dry, too

Mine go out and stay out if there is showers but they have a shelter in their run. I wouldn't put them outside if they were going to get drenched.

I wouldn't put baby guineas out if there is any chance of them getting wet.

My adults will go outside in their covered run but they'll stay in their wooden box.

Guineas don't cope with damp well.

Hi - I had a horrible experience once of putting guineas out in covered run, went out for the morning, came home to find it had thrown in down,( our garden slopes) and poor guineas were treading water nearly ( they are very good swimmers, but still). That was the first and last time! Adults are fine if they have a kind of platform area to stand on off the ground and it is covered over. A friend uses an iglu type of thing for hers, they hop in went they have had enough and their beds are raised off the ground. We had ours in the shed, with a run attached, so they could hop in and out when they had had enough.
When we move, I shall be looking for some fellow guinea lovers, so I can 'adopt' theirs, I miss ours terribly - we have had about 18 so far over the past 8 years or so, I am getting fed up of using the lawnmower as ours were so prolific - and thats the way they earned their keep!!

Well our guinea run is under our gazebo but the ground would probably still be damp I would imagine.

I put them out this afternoon when the sun came out and they seemed happy.

Gosh didn't realise guineas would be such a learning curve lol

Ps does a definite squeal mean pissed off?

A squeal rather than a squeak-squeak-squeak can be an alarm call.

Depends on the cause.
Ours will squeak (different to a wheeking which is more like a whistling noise and is a happy "Here's Food" call) if they hear a noise which alerts them but they don't know quite what to do.
GP1 does squeak squeak squeak if he hears me in the garage getting stuff to clean the cage. He's letting his brother know somethings up but he doesn't know.

A single squeal might be that one has just hassled the other. They don't walk round each other, they walk through or under the other one Hmm

i sometimes put our pig on a plastic tray with a towel and then his house on top if it is a bit damp. it did get sunny later on so he went out.

Meglet · 24/06/2012 21:56

My piggies went out in all weathers as they had a dry hutch attached to the run.

Meglet · 24/06/2012 22:04

If you look on my profile you can see a photo of the old run, 4th photo down I think.

70isaLimitNotaTarget you are so right about them trying to trample over each other rather than walk 6" to the left/right and walk around. Much more fun to try and nudge the other piggy out of the way and start a ruck .

threecurrantbuns · 25/06/2012 07:33

That looks like a good run/pig house :)

This was a wheek/squeal not a wheek-wheek just a longer wheeeek haha never thought I would be writing this. Hope it make sense, it was when he was on dds lap and she moved him, was it a stop that or pain sound? Do you think? Or just a happy sound. Sounded like a stop that sound to me but what do I know :)

Our GP1 is the more 'vocal' one (though GP2 purrs more)

The first time we met him, he did an almighty shriek when he was lifted out of his run , so I think it's just him making a statement.

He will get very agitated if his brother is taken from the run first and put in the pighouse (if I catch the little boy first) but doesn't mind if I take him out first.

They do sometimes do a "stop that, leave me alone " sound . DD tends to move him about to make sure his bum is on a towel, which he doesn't appreciate, but it never goes further than telling DD off Grin. GP1 knows what side his bread is buttered on. (That would be if they were allowed to have butter)
