Aww at baby piglets !!

They sound like they are very lucky piggies to have a new house like that!
:)

damppatchnot · 04/06/2012 16:44

Yes I have wanted this for years. It's perfect. 14x8 and will be insulated, lined and decorated so it will be a piggie palace!!!

Going to have a two tier run for the ladies, a slightly smaller one for my 4 boys and two single runs for my nursery wing!!

So Envy!!

I want to build a C&C cage in our living room for our boys but dh isn't so keen. Says that it will take up too much space. He hasn't considered the fact that the little monster's already have a huge proportion of the room already, a C&C cage would just look much neater than the current playpen set up.
Men! Grin

I love that you have a nursery wing! :)

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 04/06/2012 17:26

Hello. I've just adopted two GPs a couple of days ago and I am having the feeling that rather than a female pair it was a boy and girl. I have sexed one of them and he is definitely male, but the other one is incredibly shy and I don't want to stress her (?) too much as I have already had to bathe her and trim some urine soaked matted fur (I know :(), but she does have a bulging stomach that is quite hard.

I usually keep rabbits, so I have some experience of small pets, but I've never done a pregnancy before, you sound like you know what you are doing?

I've separated them until I can confirm sex and whether she is pregnant. What do I need to do? I took them on as was looking for a run for my rabbits, and ended up with these two along with it.

damppatchnot · 04/06/2012 17:55

My dh thinks I'm barmy!!

Hi browneggs

Sounds like your gp could be pg. They are very easy to sex and there is lots online to help

If she is pg keep her away from male as he will mate soon as she has given birth and it's not good for sows to have back to back litters

Do you know how old she is?

Shock 24!!! Grin
How do you do it?
I only just manage to keep up with 2!
Although i think its a good thing i got boys, no real chance of adding, if I had bought girls, I would have snuck the odd newbie in without dh noticing Grin

Iv'e only had mine since the end of April. I can't believe I haven't discovered them before. They are fab little animals. even if my two are a slight pita Grin

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 04/06/2012 18:27

She is six months old if the owner is to be believed. The male also. They have been kept together for three months.

They are very cute, I love when they chatter, but both very shy and don't like to be handled much at all. Have given them tubes to hide in and the "pregnant" one just hides in there constantly and is very jumpy even when I move slowly and calmly. She is also not liking her rear end being touched, but managed to give her a nice bath and groomed her (she's long haired) as she wasn't in the best condition and her back end was stained yellow and smelly.

I will take her for a check up soon to make sure her rear end is okay and have the pregnancy confirmed or denied. Welcome any advice on keeping them.

damppatchnot · 04/06/2012 18:53

My trudy was very jumpy and now she us the tamest of all

The key is to handle daily and talk to so they get used to your voice

They are fabulous pets and I too discovered late in life! Great characters and love all the different varieties and colours

Mine are all long coated breeds and get bathed and groomed regulary

I work f/t and have dc 8 and 4 but had a really bad 12 months with work and family issues and tbh gp pulled me through

I find looking after them very relaxing and therapeutic

It's something I can enjoy with dc too and lol at sneaking newbies in as that's what I did!! I started with 4 and one day dh went in and said how many are here!!!???

It keeps me quiet so he doesn't mind really Wink

Rabbits a GP pg is 63-70 days so if they've been together 3 months then chances are she is.
A boar won't harm the babies but will quite happily jump on the female again.
Your vet will confirm it or look for any other reason she could be getting pudgy (bloat, growth in abdomen, cyst).
Usually the sides are quite well defined and you can see the piglets 'rippling' the skin at the mums sides .(Ours used to stand with a pitiful expression on her little face [aaah] )
When I was a child we had an accident litter (2 girls, one wasn't) , the boar took his chances again after she gave birth -Cheeky Blighter. Then I bought a female who was already pg.
All had their litters on their own (first sow had a dead one in a litter of 3 though)

Start having a look out for homes for the piglets (you could keep females with mum and a boy with dad if you kept them in seperate male/female pens) Or would the people who gave you the pigs be able to take them?

Baby GPs are so cute, much differebt to rabbits -full fur, teeth, open eyes able to crawl along at just a few hours. You might want to keep them Grin

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 04/06/2012 21:25

I'll probably end up keeping babies, I'm stuck at home due to disability and caring for my animals is really therapeutic.

Her sides do seem a bit "active" but it's difficult to be sure as she has tufts of hair (that I call her wings) and it could just be breathing or shaking that causes it. Am trying to do lots of talking and just petting them in their cage at the moment, not picking up too much until they are more settled and used to the different noises and smells. Think they've been outside pets, so being indoors with me will be a change.

Where do people in the UK go about getting C&C cage materials btw?

QueenBonkeyMollocks · 04/06/2012 21:35

Have a look on Ebay.
You can buy a set if grids for about £40. Amazon also have them. Then you just have to find a bottom. Lots of people recommend trying a sign making place for Correx .
Put Pet den in the search :)

noyouhavehadawee · 09/06/2012 20:32

just read this wow at 24!!! can i ask what a c and c cage is - is it an inside set up?

BonkeyMollocks · 09/06/2012 20:38

C&C cage

Have a browse round the site. Lots of ideas :)

Yes indoors, although some people do use them for outdoor runs.

Shock wowzers!!! i have major piggy house envy! We have a little low roofed wooden shed / wendy house and i am so going to convert it into 2 pens when the dc grown another foot! Your piggy crib is ace - you must have a majorly understadning dh to build that for you or is he as besotted? Do you ever let them outdoors to let them loose on that lush lawn?

noyouhavehadawee · 11/06/2012 18:57

also your nursery wing - is this for accidental preganancies or are you going to breed some intentionally?

damppatchnot · 11/06/2012 20:51

Yes they go out on the lawn. It was looking very run down but with all the rain it's come back lovely so once its dry out they go!

Dh didn't build the shed. I bought it and then dh fitted it out with me closely watching! We started with a two storey playhouse but it was a bugger to clean and we struggled to all fit in. The new set up is light and airy and kids have not been out just watching them all

I am a hobby breeder so breed a litter per sow per year well I say that I only started thus year and I dont intend letting them have more than 3

We have three litters at the moment so very cute

I am keeping two sows as they are the most beautiful guineas I have ever seen. One pure White and one White and beige both thick ling hair and cutest faces

Love them to bits

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 11/06/2012 21:02

I love your set up. In my wildest dreams, this is the sort of thing I would have for rabbits and piggies, one shed each.

damppatchnot · 11/06/2012 22:27

I sat looking at my playhouse a few weeks ago which was crammed with my guineas upstairs and downstairs, hell to clean and enjoy them and thought RIGHT it's going

I put it on e bay and with the money bought the new shed

I have skinted myself to get it kitted out and it's only half done but the difference

WOW

Giddy kipper!!

OP posts:
BonkeyMollocks · 11/06/2012 22:30

It amazing! :) Have no sound though so no idea what was said.

Vair jealous of you baby piggies.

I have plans for my living room, dh doesn't know yet Confused I'm thinking I will just build it when hes at work Wink

damppatchnot · 11/06/2012 22:42

Grin the poor dh"s Not!!

I'm basically saying we are half way through insulating with loft insulation then hardboard and fablon but ran out of loft insulation then fablon. Putting second tier in each pen to give more room using wood and mesh c&c inspired

Sold hutch and might put another pen in fir nursery

Elec going in too for light and power ( might sneak heater in during snow) but tbh it's very warm with the insulation

The piggies are v happy and squeaking away!
