Lost ferret found her way back home again

I took Bruna on a (rare) walk today. She was very nervous, and eventually shat all over her bag (and me). While I was dealing with this she slipped out of her lead and disappeared. She is tiny, and I really had no hope of seeing her ever again. I went home and did notices to put through doors near where she disappeared, delivered them and then started thinking of life without her. Around 11pm I had the thought to look in my garage, where she has sometimes gone after climbing over my garden wall, but it really was a hopeless gesture I thought. But - there she was! I could hardly believe it, as she had to find her way back over about half a mile, on a route we have not done more than a few times ever. I feel like one lucky ferret Mum tonight. Yay!

Marvellous, clever wee ferret, they do have a good sense of smell though, so she probably followed you home Grin

DeadRisingPies · 14/05/2012 13:47

Yes, maybe she crapped on me so that she'd be able to track me back home after her little burst of freedom. Note to self: put something strong-smelling on shoes before taking pets out for walks.

Should have added that I'm really chuffed that she decided to come home after sampling the great outdoors.

Havent lost any of mine yet, am dreading that happening if I take them out

babyicebean · 14/05/2012 14:37

What type is she?

DeadRisingPies · 14/05/2012 15:09

She's what is called a black euroferret. A grandparent was crossed with a wild ferret, apparently.

'Polecat' I meant, not 'wild ferret'.

We have two poleys and a Dark eyed white

DeadRisingPies · 14/05/2012 19:24

I have two poleys as well. When I'm out with one, people sometimes ask 'Is that a polecat, or a ferret?' I don't quite know what to say - I thought the ferret is a domesticated polecat? Or maybe some people have wild polecats?

I know someone who has a mink and he is sooooo gorgeous but needs a special licence.

Took our big fat poley out and had someone ask if he was a badger!

Took the boys up the school to pick up the kids and it seemed the whole school descended to fuss and cuddle them.
We used to have a totally blind one who I wouldnt have trusted near anyone as he bit first then bit again just to make sure, understandable why he did it but I didnt take him anywhere. He is the only one who has bitten me in 18 months the poleys just like to lick. The DEW was bought in to fill the gap in the group when the blind boy died but he was 10 or 12 years old so really old and grumpy.

DeadRisingPies · 14/05/2012 22:50

Yes it's lovely when they graduate from nipping to licking. Can't fully trust them with other people, though (I take a disinfectant spray with me in case of nips - only had to use it once.)

How do you cope with being approached by people when walking them? I have to be in the mood to field questions whenever I take them out - though it's nice that people are so delighted to see them. I wonder if people had to go through this phase with dogs? But maybe dogs have been human companions for so long that no-one thought it strange when they started being walked in towns.

People seem to come into two camps - the ones who seem to think that ferrets are ferocious, snarling, snapping growling saber tooth tiger type creatures who will leap for the throat and those who see them as furry balls of love.

I think its easier round here as there are a fair few ferret walkers in town so its a usual sight to see.I am lucky in the boys in as much as they love the attention from anyone unless they are wearing gloves which the long slinky one loves to steal and chew.

My DEW thinks that people are there for kissing and gets upset if they dont reciprocate the love.Am waiting for the go ahead from the school to take them in as they need to fill in a form in case of problems and also the parents have to agree to them visiting

DeadRisingPies · 16/05/2012 20:30

Hope it goes well for you.
