Having very swiftly outgrown their plastic indoor cage, my three "babies" are in a makeshift cage made out of the top of the indoor cage, with an attached run made out of IKEA shoe shelves. They love their extra room, so I've ordered them the bits to make a 2 storey C&C palace :o

I've also got some fleece for bedding and they already have a large plastic hay tray. They are definately going to be indoor piggies, with some grass time when this bloody rain lets up and the weather gets warmer. DH is less than impressed that they are taking up a considerable amount of floor space, but he loves them really.

The cutest of cute!! I have put her in an indoor cage and am taking her to my bedroom tonight just to be sure

She looks ready but I think she will be glad of some me time as shed so fluffy that the other mummies babies use her as a pillow!!

Oo yes, do we get photos of baby piggies?!

damppatchnot · 05/05/2012 08:29

Angel has been in my bedroom at side of my bed all night. Nothing yet but birth imminent. So tired as awake at every shuffle! Just like having a new-born in the room again!

Will get some pics on as soon as.....

dampatch when I was 9/10 yo our sow had her 2nd litter in the lounge. We were expecting my aunt, uncle and 3 cousins over. My mum had shampooed the lounge carpet the day before.
I saw a lump of (what I thought was) strawberry jam. It was one of the afterbirths.
3 baby GPs were under the sofa with their mum. She took less than 20 minutes and we were completely unaware (we knew she was pg, Grin. Trying to catch her was fun, she was so slender after her 3 pig bump)

DoesItWearingWellies · 05/05/2012 15:14

Aww, baby piggies are totally adorable :)

Lacka the C&C looks amazing. DD1 was going to make one for her boys but opted to make one from wood in the end.

In her hog enclosure she's made some fleece liners with towel behind to soak up wee and velcro round the edges to keep it in place and they work really well. They've had two in rotation for over a year now (one in the wash, one in with the pigs) and she's only just thinking of having to make new ones as the others are beginning to look a little...thin (and she used cheap fleece from ikea at £1.01 each).

I know of people who added waterproof sheets (as you'd use on a bed) to the bottom layer of the fleece/towel combo so any urine doesn't even get past the liner.

LackaDAILYcarb · 05/05/2012 21:28

Thanks Wellies :)
It's looking even better with the coroplast tray in and their new fleece topsheets. I still have to do the first floor and ramp, but the piggies seem happy with it!
At the minute I have some pampers bedmats underneath, but I'm going to buy some washable inco bed mats.

Hope you have the pitter of teeny feet room damppatch, if you haven't already.

LackaDAILYcarb - i had some HIPPYCHICK bed protectors left over from DC bedding protecor days. They are like a felty fabric with a plastic sealed in the middle (cotton/felty on both sides).
I got mine from Boots, you might be able to pick one up from Ebay (even pre-used would be fine, you can wash them at high temperatures to clean)

I sewed onto the back of a fleece -bit of a chore because I hate sewing- but I plan to make some hotwater bottle covers for winter and buy those microwaveable hotties. At the moment they have a SnugglePad and traditional hotties, but I won't be using the same ones this winter (worry about them perishing and leaking)

Terrible news

Angel gave birth after a long labour to an undeveloped baby at 3am
I took her to the vets at 9am as I could feel she still had babies inside but she had not delivered

As I thought a scan revealed she had three dead babies inside and the vet gave her an injection to help start labour after an internal examination to ensure no blockages

So we are waiting and going bAck in 2 hours

U fear I may loose her

Rollersara · 06/05/2012 10:34

Oh no! Did the vet say she was at risk too? :(

damppatchnot · 06/05/2012 10:47

She is no eating or drinking and a c section is just too risky. If the injection doesn't work i may have to put her down

She's pushing now, it's awful

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/05/2012 11:13

Poor Angel.Sad

dampatch you've been through it haven't you?
I remember your thread about your 1 week old piglet dying out of the blue.

Hope your girl comes through this, fingers crossed.
Ask your vet if there's any infection or anything that might have caused the death of the pigs. You breed GPs don't you ,so you need to know if it's just a one off with Angel or something you need to look at all your pigs.

(Our sow had one born dead -delivered 2nd out of 3) but we don't know why.She did accidently get kicked by my dad when she ran out from under the sofa. That sounds bad but it was an accident).

You'll be getting news soon. Fingers crossed.

damppatchnot · 06/05/2012 11:32

Angel just passed away

Very sad day here

damppatchnot · 06/05/2012 12:10

Angel had been acting unlike any of my other girls. She literally living in the nesting box this week and did not cone out to eat, I put done food next to her as I figured she was too big to move about angle she ate it.

I knew she was about due hence why I brought her in and she seemed ok until she started labour. It was a shock when the stillborn came out and it worried me it took so long.

The vet said she wad otherwise healthy and it was just one of those things. As I bought her as an adult and already pregnant I don't know anything about her history unlike all my others,

She was a beautiful cream thick coated girl with lovely eyes and loved to be brushed and fussed. She had been living in a hutch and the owner said he had no time for her do I'm glad in the short time she was here she had been very much loved.

My dd is heartbroken and we have just buried her under the camellia.

My ds has just picked some flowers and put them on the grave

I had a little cry as my gp are my babies and I adore them.

We discovered that the likely cause of the baby's death a few weeks back was bloat from eating too much grass. I've kept the little ones of it since and put them in a run on the patio with thier toys so they can still enjoy the sun

I thought we would be fussing after angel and her baby's today. Such a sad day

LackaDAILYcarb · 06/05/2012 17:27

Oh no damppatch :( :( :(

how horrible, and what an ordeal for her to to through.

so sorry :(

I know I felt so so sorry for her

Dreadful

Rollersara · 06/05/2012 21:07

I'm so sorry :(

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/05/2012 23:13

dampatch do you know how old Angel was?
Could it be the case that she was too old for a first litter? (Their pelvic bones fuse after they are a certain age, making it nigh on impossible for them to give birth).

Sad news though on the day you should have had the 4 babies and mum.

DoesItWearingWellies · 07/05/2012 00:55

Oh, I'm sorry to hear it damp :(

damppatchnot · 07/05/2012 13:03

Thanks everyone

I bought angel a few weeks ago. I wanted to mix my stock up as all mine off one breeder and I found a breeder of rabbits, fancy mice and guinea pig.

He wanted to concentrate on his mice so was selling his gp.

They all looked well cared for and the set up looked very good. I bought two lunkyara females who we called angel and lulu and a lunkyara make who my ds called ja ja. He told me angel was heavily pg and lulu pg. I also bought a two female Peruvian who we called penny and rhoda and penny had a week old girl we called pip and rhoda is pg too

I did think it was odd they were all pg but then he is a breeder and I rather they would be with me living free in the big shed than in hutches. I know gp have to have first litter before 8 months as the pelvic bones close together at this time ( they don't actually fuse but it's impossible for gp to have natural births after this occurs) as he was knowledgable I assumed be knew this and I did feel angels bones and they had separated

I checked all mine thoroughly last night and they are all as fit S a fiddle. The pg ones don't have long but are running about and eating like horses. Angel was very quiet the last week and did not leave the box.

Little pip is a chunky monkey and loves running through the tunnels with the other little ones.

I am going to try and get hold of the breeder who sold me Angel today and see what he says as I never want to have another gp go through that again
