Help me compile a First Aid Kit for my Super Furry Animals:

I'm reading through these threads about guinea-pigs.I know they can suddenly go downhill so I'm getting a kit together (hopefully I won't need but if I don't have it...well you know s*ds law!)

I've ordered some Gorgeous Guinea Shampoo and ointment (I need to collect it from the Post Office)

On Amazon:
Fly Guard- suitable for GPs, lasts 3 months. I've got a fly screen mesh to cover the doors in their hoghouse

Anti-Parasite Spot On- for little furries.Contains Invermectin. I might look at the oral form as well, this one is a 'behind the ear' one.

Oxbow Critical Care Science Recovery- the reviews recommend the fine grind -easier to syringe down their throats

Syringes (no needles though Shock

Some antiseptic cream like Sudocream.

So, what else could/should I put in?
I can order stuff on Amazon for next day delivery if need be. I don't want too much product as I'm sure it's all got a use-by date.

I'm going to add Citronella Oil (to use outside the hoghouse) .I know if I buy flypapers then I'll get caught in them.Lavender works as an insect repellant but it also repells me!

Large tubigrips for GP jackets.

Probiotics are also handy in case of ABs.

I'd also get basic FAK stuff too, like non-stick dressings, cohesive bandage (I think it's called this? It's the bandage that sticks to itself but not to the skin/fur etc) and some low-tack tape such as micropore just in case they have an injury that requires a dressing before you can get them to the vet IYSWIM.

Otherwise it looks like a good piggie FAK :)

Can I buy probiotics on-line?
If my pigs needed antibiotics that would be from the vet (I 'm assuming) so they could recommend/prescribe probitics.?

Ah, yes, didn't think of that Blush. Of course the vet would be able to sell/recommend/prescribe you some with the ABs [headdesk].

I would get Piggie Potions by Peter Guerney and talk to Vedra at CCT. I get Avipro probiotic from The Hay Experts. Not all vets have probiotics - I have had experience of that unfortunately.

My daughter's Guinea-Pig (GP1) took about ten years off me yesterday.
I went out to the hoghouse before I collected her from school and he had something on his face, looked like it was dripping from one nostril.
I thought "Oh Feck what do I do for a runny nose"?

I changed all the bedding, took out the Readigrass (which they've had for ages, no problems), gave fresh hay,(even though the house was fresh on Wednesday, so not dirty).

Then I sat him down, wiped his nose, not blood, not sticky.
I smelled him. Tomatoe. They had tomato and it gets a bit of the juice in the middle. It must've been where they'd carried it about.
Little swine. He's been clean nosed, DD religiously checks him twice a day.

Tweezers.

There was a post a while back about a GP with a Hama Bead stuck to her teeth.
GP 1 was pawing at his mouth and twitching back his top lip. (He's missing a bottom tooth at the moment but it's growing back).
He had a huge strand of grass/hay wedged in his top teeth, about 1" into his mouth.
Did a guinea/towel/wrap and eased it out.
Honestly GP1, I can't leave you for 2 flippin minutes, can I? Hmm

70, where did you get your syringes from? Your first aid kit sounds fab Smile.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/05/2012 19:53

DH found the syringes online on Amazon.

I'm buying all this kit in the hope that GPs don't actually need it IYSWIM Grin

The Range sells feeding syringes in their pet dept too but I don't know how big they are compared to a guinea-pigs tiny little mouth,

Fab, thank you! I'm doing the same, compiling one in the hope that we don't need it.

Bumping this

mercibucket · 01/06/2014 09:54

Good idea
I have a cream from gorgeous guineas that has come in very useful over the years for scratches and minor skin infections - neem soothe gel

Also their shampoos and skin melts are fab

Ivermectin

Why fly guard? Mine have never had probs. Always thought that was just rabbits

Instead of probiotics you can use a gp poop from a healthy gpig, mixed in with critical care

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/06/2014 14:02

I bought the Rear Guard spray a couple of years back but I haven't had to use it on mine (also it can't be used with the Xeno 450 because it would double up the doseages)

GP can be just as vunerable to FlyStrike as rabbits if they have a combination of dirty bedding/dirty bottoms (GPs droppings can change quickly) a saggy arsed older boar (our GP2 always had pooh in him bum Hmm ) .
We've been vigilant and scrupulous with their cage hygiene in summer but it means daily cleaning and minimal hay (enough to eat but other non hay bedding so they don't overheat) but they are so messy Grin

With all things, Be Prepared, otherwise they pick the most inappropriate times to take ill.

YY to the healthy dropping from an obliging cagemate but it needs to be a soft pooh. Ours guard these , sitting on our lap, the body raises up, head ducks under and gone. Cue the judgey looks (imagine if we tried to take it Hmm )
Packet probiotics seems easier Grin
(Our vet said there's a low level of probiotic in Critical Care but I don't know if that's enough to counteract the antibiotics effect)

Children's nurofen as a painkiller/anti-inflammatory. It's widely recommended by rodentologists. 0.2 ml for an average piggie. They love it!!
