Small animal hutches-tell me what you clean them with

Our indoor cage is plastic so easy to clean.
Our outside pig house is treated wood. I line the sleeping area with a couple of layers of cardboard and rubber mats before the bedding.

I've noticed a load of chalky little white guinea-pig pee patches outside of the cardboard.

I've previously used the spray Jeyes fluid (it says it's suitable for hutches) then rinse and wipe.

I looked on a GP website and they recommend Dettol.

What do you all use? I'm thinking about summer and the risk of flies.
I'm currantly whipping out any wet/soiled hay daily and doing a complete clean every 3 days, but I'll increase this to daily as it gets warmer (I'm anticipating the piggies won't need such a deep bed as they have now)

you can get special cleaning solutions for small animal housing - I think Pets at Home sell it, probably other pet shops too

\link{http://www.petsathome.com/shop/deep-clean-small-pet-cage-disinfectant-500ml-by-beaphar-15836\this sounds good} - spray on, leave to dry (it's not the one I was thinking of but better, I think)

\link{http://www.petsathome.com/shop/johnson-s-clean-and-safe-disinfectant-for-small-pet-trigger-spray-500ml-15784\ah, this is the cleaner} - DS2 used to keep rats, & I used it for all their paraphernalia (the cage was plastic so not a problem)

Thanks- I'll have a lookie round.

I'll need to smell them first (might get a few funny looks) - my GP1 trots into his newly clean house and as soon as his bum touches the floor he pees.
If it's a strong smell he might see it as competition [bugrin]

If it was smelly/stained and desperately needed it I would use a bicarbonate/vinegar/lemon juice solution and rinse it off with boiling hot water, or I'd just use boiling hot water.

I wouldn't use chemicals as I feel there's too much residue left which could easily irritate their small lungs.

I use a steam cleaner.

I've got a handleld steamer thingey (about the size of a big hairdrier) + a powerpoint in the roof of the hog house .

Why did I not think of it????????????????

I could use the steam to shift their chalky, white "I was here" puddles (GP1 does this) with no chemical smell or stickiness, nearly dry floor and I can make them respect me because I'll look like a female James Bond!!

Obviously will take the piglets out of the pighouse before I start steaming Wink
